We're going to a black tie wedding in another city, where a college friend of mine lives. My friend agreed to come to our airbnb and watch DD (21 months). She'll probably be there from around 5pm until midnight. DD goes to bed at 7:30. She has already said we can't pay her, but I want to anyway! My plan is to offer her cash and if she really refuses I'll mail her a gift card to a nice nail salon. ETA: The college friend doesn't know the couple getting married.

I probably would not offer cash. Maybe get dinner and snacks for her for the night and then send her a thank you card / letter later. Maybe flowers?

I wouldn't give her cash, but would get her a nice gift of some sort- mani pedi near her, gift card for a restaurant. Something in the $50 range probably. It sounds like she really does just want to help a friend and see your baby!

I'd probably get dinner for her also and then send flowers or a gift basket of whatever you think she'd prefer. What a good friend!

My best friend watched my son for me when I went to a wedding. It as only for like an hour and a half before he was in bed, I just got her a bottle of wine. But she is my best friend and wanted to just hang with him anyways since we don't see her much.

thanks for this feedback. I'm going to add another poll option to not give cash at all. But honestly if it were me, I would rather have cash than a gift certificate. That may be why I'm biased!
She isn't my best friend, and we're not super close but we were in the same group in college.

I voted $50, but that can be whatever form works for both of you: gift, gift card, cash card, IOU (like equivalent babysitting, pet sitting, house sitting for her etc)

I wouldn't be comfortable giving or receiving cash in this situation. I would definitely bring or send a gift.

Since she already said not to pay her, I would get her a nice gift instead! We have several friends who babysit for us occasionally and refuse money, so we gift them dinner, wine, etc. I think a mani-pedi sounds awesome too!!

I would just feed her (room service) and bring her back some cake from the wedding if there's anything left over. For my bff, a bottle of liquor would go over well too.

@babybean404: I would prefer cash as well over gift certificates in general but in this case it would be much less awkward for her to accept a gift cert over cash.

For a gift certificate I would do something like Target (equivalent of cash) versus a nail salon.

I'd just do gift card right away if she already insisted not to pay her. If I were the friend I would not take your money either!!
