We've had three or four "inner" curtain liners since we got married 3.5 years ago, but we've had the same outer/decorative shower curtain this whole time. Is it time for a new one?

I've had the same outer curtain since I moved into my house 5 years ago. And it was there when I moved in, so who knows how long it's been there.
But I wash it occasionally so I see it like any other type of linen. I'll use it until I'm tired of it or it wears out.

I just bought a new one after 2.5 years because I really disliked the first one.

agree keep it until you are sick of it or it starts to look bad! we've had ours a loooong time. I replace the inner one when it starts to get gross.

The outer curtain we've had for two years. We bought a new one when we redid the bathroom, otherwise I would have kept the old one. It's washable, so I don't see it is any different than other linens. We do replace the liner 3 months or so.

Our liners get this gross pink mold/mildew on them. It's like pepto bismol pink.
Anyone else?

@Rainbow Sprinkles: ours gets a rusty look. I think it's from having hard water.
I just wash ours frequently, or replace. It grosses me out!

We replaced our guest bath curtain because I wanted to add color to the bathroom. The liner is in decent shape since maybe that shower has been used a dozen times only. Our shower has doors.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: Yes! I buy a new liner maybe every 6-8 months? I keep the outer part until I redecorate...or, forever? The one in our bathroom moved with me through like 5 different apartments and has been in this house since I moved in almost 4 years ago haha.

@Mrs. Lion: I really like ours...we got it as a wedding gift. It seems to be great quality because it's holding up really well! But I love how a new shower curtain completely changes the look of a Bathroom.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: All. The. Time. Even when we wash and/or buy "mildew resistant" ones. It makes me NUTS.

Also, I typically replace when we move, so every 2 years or so? My mom rotates seasonal ones.

I have a fabric curtain from Target but plasticky liners that I replace twice a year!
@Rainbow Sprinkles: nasty pink sludge!

We have washable shower curtains and liners!

i replace the inner liner when it gets pinky/rusty (so, about 6 months?) but the fabric curtain is always on the outside of the tub anyways. I've had it since I moved in here so just under 2 years.

We Replace the inner ones at least twice a year. Outer one? When we get bored of it i guess.

In our condo I replaced the liner every 3ish months. Curtain till I want a new one. I make sure the curtain is washable.

I don't foresee changing ours any time soon because I LOVE it. We have a fabric liner that I wash when it gets gross.
pomelo / 5129 posts
We also get gross deposits. I can usually wash a plastic liner 2 or 3 times and reuse it, but I'd say we replace them about once a year.

Inner liner, when I notice mold and outer curtain we have yet to replace since our wedding.

My outer liner can be washed so I just wash it every once in a while. The inner liner I change if it feels icky, I guess once or twice a year?
kiwi / 548 posts
I change the liner 1x a year. I got a great one on amazon that really does prevent mildew. We have a cleaning lady and the day we give them an Xmas bonus is the day I ask them to change the liner every year.
grapefruit / 4089 posts
We change the inner liner maybe 1-2x per year, or more if it gets gross. The outer liner we've had for a long time! It's in great shape, so I'll only change it when I really get sick of it

We have had our master outer curtain since we moved in together so four years. I don't plan to replace it anytime soon because I still really like it.
The liner I should probably replace soon. @Rainbow Sprinkles: we get pink grossness too. In the toilet too if I haven't washed it in a while- but not like nasty long, just over a week or whatever.
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
Haha, I am going to replace our liner today, actually. I have to wash and iron the outer cover, as my mother in law took a shower with it inside the tub this week.

I get the same pink sludge. I bleach the inner liner every 3 months or so, and put it in the sun to dry. then I can keep them for about 2 yrs until the bleach just doesn't cut it anymore.

Huh. This is really interesting. I had no idea most people replace them more often than I do. My liners usually last years, but I make everyone (even guests) spray it down after every use with the daily shower spray. I get the liners and spray from the Dollar Tree so neither cost that much. I've never had mold or pink sludge issues. The house I grew up didn't need curtains, so I suppose I never really thought about it.

@Hoots: We hardly replace inner liners either---I've washed it 1-2 times though. But also, we primarily take showers in the bathroom with a shower door, so the bathroom with the shower curtain is low use.
coconut / 8861 posts
Same fabric shower curtain since 2007. Inner liner has changed once or twice. It's in our guest bathroom, so no need to change it until we move.

I wash the outside, fabric curtain every so often in my washing machine. We have no plans to replace it and we've had it since we moved in together 3 years ago.
The inside curtain I sort of "wash" too ( I spray it after every shower and wipe it with bathroom cleaner when I am cleaning the tub), but generally I just replace them when they start looking gross. I get the liners really cheap anyway so I don't mind just replacing them.
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21616 posts
I just get the cheap $2-$5 liners and replace them when they get gross- 8-12 months?
cantaloupe / 6146 posts
@Rainbow Sprinkles: same, yearly (or a littlesooner) for the inner, when I get bored with the pattern for the outer... usually when we move 8months-2years.
kiwi / 631 posts
I have had my same outer curtain about 5 years now. I've moved twice since I bought it, and it's worked well in every bathroom I've had. We get cheap-y inner curtains, and I change those out when they start looking icky.
wonderful olive / 19353 posts
@auggiefrog: Same here! We're boring so we've used the same outer curtain forever, but it's a design that's more contemporary so it's worked well for every bathroom of ours so far! We do buy new inner liners when it starts getting gross looking.

I'm so happy that I started using a fabric liner instead of plastic. I just throw it in the wash when the bottom starts turning pink and dingy. It sticks to the side of the tub so much better than plastic liners, so I don't have to deal with that yucky cold plastic touching me unexpectedly.
grapefruit / 4049 posts
I get inner liners at the dollar store and switch them out every 1-2 months! The outer liners we usually keep on for 2-3 years, just because we have been moving apts that often for the past decade or so.
