I do think the lava monster is sorta freaky, but I don't know if I'd say it's scarier than Frozen. I feel like there are more intense scenes in Moana? My LO is 3.5 and doesn't really get scared during movies...she's been fine with both Frozen and Moana.

It's in 3 scenes. I think you could skip the first two easily but might miss part of the story skipping the third. Your LOs probably won't mind but you might want to go back and watch it yourself later. Here's a picture:

My kids are younger and are obsessed with it. It's probably my two year olds favorite movie.

The lava Monster is scary but the last scene with her is beautiful and redeems the other scarier bits.

It wasn't really any scarier, but it didn't keep the attention of my 4 year old. She got bored pretty quickly.

I would say it's scarier than Frozen. The snow monster is in such a small part of the movie, but there are a lot more potentially scare parts in Moana. My son (almost 3) loved it and did not get scared. I have a hard time judging scare factor because my son doesn't get scared in movies. We saw it twice in the theaters and have watched it 3 times since Tuesday. We love it, but it's definitely older/more mature than Frozen.

The lava monster parts are kinda scary, but I also think the realm of monsters scene could be scary too. There's a lot of weird monsters and the color scheme is very psychedelic which could make it seem scarier. Moana also has a nightmare that her island/parents disappear. Also, Maui is a jerk to Moana for the first half or so of the movie. It's pretty lighthearted IMO, but if your kids don't like mean characters they might not like him or a lot of the scenes he is in.

My 4yo won't rewatch frozen because of the snow monster (he's watched it many times, but then declared it was too scary) but didn't mind Moana.

@PinkElephant: I wouldn't say it's scarier in monster-terms, but there are quite a few tense, scary moments (My son was jumping up and down, shaking his hands in nervousness, basically acting like me when I watch a tense scene ever since I was a kid.) but my 2 yr old was totally unfazed.

@808love: you should show your LO the after credits scene and Frozen Fever if you haven't seen those...he calms down and seems pretty friendly and happy in those scenes!

@PinkElephant: it's definitely not a huge part of the movie, and there is some comic relief afterwards, but I know some kids are really sensitive to that kind of imagery. It is kind of surprising how many Disney movies are missing one or both parent when you stop and think about it!!

My son is OBSESSED with Maui. He has the fish hook, tattoos, and pjs featuring Maui. He has pretended to be Maui almost daily since we first saw it in November!
