We have no family and friends nearby so I am pretty confused and bummed about how to celebrate LO first birthday to make it memorable and special for her and us. Any ideas.

We also celebrated our daughters first birthday with no family nearby. We did a family trip to the aquarium

@blackbird: I agree. Make it a special milestone for your family. Go to the zoo, a special park, an aquarium, the beach, the mountains; something that will be meaningful for your little family.

Last year we went to the zoo and she went on the carousel for the first time, then we did cake and presents at home.
This year I'm not sure yet, I think we'll be planning a whole week of activities. DH is taking several days off. We are thinking boat ride, checking out different libraries (she loves them), going out for pizza and ice cream (her favorites). Just doing fun things together locally, and adding in things she has never done.

My DD's actual birthday was on a weekday so DH and I both had to work. But we did a little celebration when we got home -- we Skyped with my parents and took a video of all of us singing happy birthday to her, she got a cupcake and licked most of the frosting off, and we helped her unwrap a couple presents. It was really low-key and I felt a little bad about not doing a big party that weekend (we do have friends around, though no family) but in the end I think it was better this way. I couldn't figure out how to plan a party around her naps and it just wasn't worth throwing her whole schedule off for something she'd never remember. We watch the video sometimes and it's so cute -- she totally faceplants into the frosting and then starts signing "more, more, more!"

@Jass: Our families aren't nearby either, so we had 2 family parties about a month apart, on either side of LOs actual birthday. Her Bday is July 12, and over the July 4 weekend, we flew to my family's house and celebrated with them there. And then end of July, we flew to DH's family and celebrated her birthday a second time with them.
On her actual birthday, we had a good family day, just the 3 of us at home. It was perfect!
