I don't live in a warm winter climate, but I think dressing a newborn is basically the same everywhere - you want layers. Even in Southern California, it's still winter, so it's not like you will be going out in a short-sleeved onesie and bare feet. I would start with cotton sleep and plays (Carter's and Gap have great selections). Maybe have 1-2 in a warmer/heavier fabric. Add cotton hats and socks (to wear underneath the footed sleep and plays when it's chilly). You will also need a blanket or two to wrap around your baby in the car seat or stroller.

I don't think I ever used fleece except for sleepers. Layers are the biggest thing. I do put LO in long sleeve onesies in the winter, but I still use the short sleeve with something over (like a light long sleeve shirt). When he was little, he was often in his car seat which is already somewhat warm and if typically have an A&A blanket over him anyway. We do use fleece blankets for walks in winter. (I'm in San Diego.)

That sounds like our fall!

I did cotton sleepers in the newborn days, and pants + long sleeved onesie (or long sleeved shirt) + socks plus a lightweight jacket when she was a year old.
