My LO is 12 months old and still not great at using a regular cup. (I'm using straw cups, not sippy cups). I want to wean him off of bottles, but every time I give him formula/milk in a cup, he takes a sip and is done. I don't know if it's because he's still not good at it or if he just wants the bottle.
He's still getting formula simply because I don't want to waste what I have but I don't plan to purchase any more once I'm done.
If your LO was not good at drinking from a cup, how would you get them to drink their milk?

My LO had no problem using a straw cup, but he would not drink regular cow's milk out of a cup for like 6 months. I would make him smoothies, which he would drink, but other than that, as long as they are getting calcium and fat from other sources, it's not necessary after 12 months.

I voted cold turkey, but if he's not good at the straw cup, switch to a sippy. My lo is very small so I couldn't afford for him to get fewer calories, so we tried out a bunch of different sippys. Most are very hard to suck, but the Take and Toss cups were fast enough that he still took in the same volume. Then we went to straw cups at two years.

Eh...my LO STILL doesn't drink the same amount of liquids from straw cups/sippies at 22 months!
At 14 months, we cold-turkey cut out all day time bottles, but kept a morning and night bottle because we had weight gain issues her first year. She has never had the same amount of milk during the day since. She went from four 6 oz bottles a day to now sipping mayyyyybe 4 oz total of hemp milk in a day.
LO can't have dairy products, so there's no substituting yogurt or cheese or anything else. Soooo...we still have a night time bottle that I need to drop ASAP--then she'll be down to only water and about 4 oz of a hemp milk a day I guess.
We've tried about 20 straw and sippy cups. No dice on any of them.

This is not going to help at all, but my LO simply stopped drinking milk. We tried so many cups, including straw cups which she absolutely loves for water, but she just refused to drink milk from anything other than a bottle. At a certain point (13 or 14 months, I think), we just took them away She gets as much water and yogurt and cheese as she wants. We brought up our concerns to the pediatrician and she said it was fine as long as she was getting fat and protein and calcium from other sources.

I voted other. This sounds similar to my DS2 who is also 12 months old. He isn't as good with the sippy cup - he doesn't do straw at all. Basically during the day, he only gets milk from a sippy. He doesn't drink as much but doc said that's ok because he doesn't need it. He's about 27 pounds so he doesn't need the calories from it. He still get a nighttime bottle because it helps him fall asleep. I'll fight that battle another day.
Something my doc said clicked with me. He might not be as good with the sippy but if I don't offer it, he'll never get better. He has no incentive to. So if he drinks less that's ok.

I tried different sippy-cups until I found the one that he liked to use which was thankfully the cheap ones that are meant to be used and tossed.
We are now trying to make the transition to no lid. So I use the little dixie cups and mostly do water in them. -
i would try the sippy cup instead. the concept of holding the container above the level of your mouth and turning it upside down is the same with the bottle and sippy cup.
we used a straw cup, but LO was not really getting it until one night i accidentally turned the heat fan to high in his room and he woke up crying, sweating and dehydrated and he sucked the milk out of the straw cup like he'd been doing it since birth. obviously i don't recommend that method.

I started getting rid of the daytime bottles , then a few weeks later got rid of the morning bottle, she never missed them. Finally a couple months later I stopped the bed time bottle. Honestly i probably could have gotten rid of it earlier but I just loved that snuggle time. She seemed to look for it a couple of nights then gave up and didn't mind
