Doctor wants her to get some blood work done for blood count and lead levels. We know we're definitely going to see lots of tears
how was it like for you? How did the hospital lab handle these situations in your area?

@Snowybreeze: Is it just a heel prick? If so, we had those done and it wasn't that bad at all!
We also had blood tests done using an IV when our first was very young (to test for jaundice) and that was much harder!

We did this when she was a year old...lab handled it great. I held her in my lap and the tech said she would try once and if she couldn't get a vein we could come back another day (as not to traumatize her). LO cried but it was over fast and then she got a cookie and sticker and was all smiles again! It was worse for me watching her get pricked!!!!

@Mrbee no, the doctor said they'll need tube(s) of it, so the procedure will be similar to how we adults get the blood drawn. She described several lab technicians will hold her in place so she can't wiggle out. Maybe I hate getting blood work done on myself so the image is worst!
And yeap with our daughter we had to get her heel pricked for jaundice in her earlier newborn days too.
I haven't heard of the IV blood work, what is that like?
@Ginabean3: I really hope for that too! Doubting it though, the last couple visits to the doctor she's already crying with or without shots. I'll have to talk to someone at the lab and ask them for the details. Thanks!

@Snowybreeze: I just meant, a blood draw from a vein. Sorry, maybe I'm using the terms wrong!

It's not fun, and our lab techs tried a little to hard to cheer him up/distract him. Which made things worse since he doesn't like people in his face. But DH or I would hold him, and it doesn't take long.

We were very lucky to get one of the most experienced paediatric nurses in the city do our sons blood draw - she got his vein first try but it was still super traumatic for me! He got bloods done at about 10 and a half months - luckily I was still breastfeeding so as soon as he was done I put him straight on the boob and he calmed down pretty quick. It sucks, but if you just remind yourself its for their own good its manageable!

Our ped told us that when we schedule the appointment we request it with their best blood drawer for kids. Once we got there they had me hold her in my lap, and hold down both her arms so she couldn't squirm. Then the tech held the arm where she was going to draw the blood from. She cried, but it was over and done with within a minute! Much better than I expected. She calmed down right away after I gave her a lollipop!

@Snowybreeze: how old is your little one? We did many blood draws when DS was a baby. The easiest was to swaddle him with the arm to take blood out. Then I would breastfeed him. It was over fast. At 3 we tried for blood and it was a nightmare because I couldn't swaddle or nurse and they couldn't get the blood (3 sticks and literally no blood). We did a genetic test in December and that took 3 tries but he was so brave.

My DS is 16 months. We have to go for blood draws every 3 months. It's pretty bad while the catheter is in. Once it's out we are fine again

@Snowybreeze: to be honest, it waz terrible but he was only 4 months and we.had to keep coming back to get.it drawn bc.they couldn't get enough blood. Took three people snd s nicu nurse had to come do it bc his veins were so tiny. By.the end.i was a mess trying. He bawled a lot.but afterrhe was fine. One thing that helped wa they let me nurse him while doing it.

We've had to have quite a few blood draws done. While it was never "fun" to see my little guy being held down by at least 2 adults with a third taking the blood (he's chubby so finding a vein wasn't possible until he was 1.5 yrs old - so it was taken from his head) he was always fine after everyone let go. Just remember to take the pacifier if you use one.

M just did this at his one year check up. It was just a finger prick and I was amazed at how well he handled it. No tears and very cooperative.
