DS is 4 months old and was recently diagnosed with Hydronephrosis. He's had the VGUR and next week is the renal scan. I'm wondering if anyone out there had a kid with this same condition. Thanks!

I don't know how to tag some one from another thread but there was another mom in September due date group whose baby also has this. My LO had one just slightly enlarged kidney so he had an ultrasound last week but I haven't heard anything yet. He's only 5 weeks. Hope it resolves on its own for your LO.

@Alba4: My DS does, he is now 3.5 y/o. It was detected around the time of my 20 week anatomy scan if I can remember correctly. So after he was born I told our pediatrician and she sent us in for an ultrasound at about 1 month old. The ultrasound confirmed hydronephrosis in one kidney. So we were sent to a nephrologist, who sent us to a urologist. He got the vcug done ~5 months which showed no reflux. Then the mag3 renal scan at 1 y/o which showed no blockage. So fortunately no surgery was needed. We just continued with bi-annual ultrasounds and follow up, and have now graduated to yearly ultrasounds and follow up visits. We do, however, have to watch closely for UTIs so when he was younger we had to get a few urinalysis when he had fevers with no other nasal symptoms in case the fevers were from a UTI.
Good luck with the renal scan. I can share more if you like. Everything was scary at first and I cried a lot, but he's a happy healthy kid now.

Yes, my daughter was diagnosed with a duplicated right kidney and hydronephrosis on a 37 week ultrasound. No one had picked it up before then but I believe it's usually spotted at the 20 week anatomy scan. They told us it resolves itself in most kids after birth but she had an ultrasound at a few days old which confirmed the duplicated kidney and diagnosed severe hydronephrosis. She was immediately put on an antibiotic for suspected reflux and sure enough the VCUG showed grade 5 reflux (the highest level). She's 17 months now and is still on the preventive antibiotic but will eventually need surgery. Since she hasn't had any infections (knock wood), our urologist prefers to just monitor her closely and wait until after potty training to do the surgery. However, if she does develop a fever and the pediatrician does not see an obvious cause (ear infection, etc) she needs to be catheterized to rule out a UTI. She is happy, healthy and a totally normal toddler otherwise. Feel free to message me with any questions. We've learned a lot about kidneys and bladders!

@Alba4: I just wanted to chime in that I had his as a child. I wasn't diagnosed until middle school and I had to have a surgery at age 12 but I literally haven't had a problem since! I am sure things have advanced in terms of detection and treatment since then, plus I know this is not your exact situation, but I thought another positive story couldn't hurt!
Good luck to you and lo!!

@iluvboba637: wow, no reflux or blockage. I've heard that sometimes babies just need time to grow!
@SeptMomma12: DS started preventative antibiotics until we know the cause... So far no reflux, but our next test will determine if there is a blockage. I am worried about long-term antibiotic use, so my pediatrician recommended an infant probiotic.
Thsnks for sharing, everyone!@MamaCate: great to hear you are healthy!

@Alba4: Yeah, I definitely don't love the long-term antibiotic use - it's something I've talked about with our pediatrician and the urologist many times. Basically they've both said while it's not optimal, it's a low dose and in her case, it very much beats the alternative (a kidney infection that could shut down her kidney before we know about it). Good luck!
