If you've never been to Quebec City, it's a must see! Gorgeous, lots to do/see, lovely weather in the summer.

I've been to Newport/Providence and really loved the trip! Also going to the North or South fork of LI would be nice too. Stay in a nice B&B, go wine tasting, eat good seafood, hang out at the beach, go to spa...

@Foodnerd81: Anytime we've been to cape cod it's been like 6+ hours with traffic, and I think most rentals are also week long? I'd love to go there anotehr time tho!
@scg00387: hmm nashville! Going on the list
@snowjewelz: we grew up in Queens so long island just seems...not exciting/far enough, lol. Although hamptons could be nice

@hilsy85: It's different out there tho! But I live in LI too so I get what you mean... Sometimes it doesn't seem "get away" enough!

Miami? We went two years ago and I was really pleasantly surprised by it. Not sure how long of a flight it is from you through.
squash / 13764 posts
@lamariniere: it's a short flight, but would be BRUTALLY hot in August. We love Miami though (just when it's cold in NYC ).

What about Adirondacks? I love the Lake Placid Lodge or the Sagamore on Lake George is nice too (just more families than couples).
Is it just the two of you? We typically vacation as a family which makes renting costly, but desensitizes me to the cost of hotels when it's just DH and I:) Watch Hill is also lovely! Or Chatham Bars Inn!
We vacation in Nantucket as a family in the summer and it's great, but lots of advance planning with the car ferry and snagging good rentals.

Maine? Berkshires? Adirondacks?
Are you looking to stay in a hotel, or are you picturing a rental cottage? I've enjoyed having a rental house when we vacation with DD.
squash / 13764 posts
@skibobrown: we usually do a rental house, but if it's only for 2-3 days, I think I'd like a b&b or hotel so we don't have to deal with spending time grocery shopping.

@Sparkler: yep just us! We know a lot of people going to Lake George actually. It seems similar to the Catskills (where we spend a lot of time), but I'm sure it's lovely! I agree I think the ferry issue with Nantucket is too much work for a short vacay!

Montreal? It is a great city and that might be around the time of the jazz festival which is really fun.

That's funny you mention Chicago as a smaller, cleaner NYC cause I made a day trip there a few weekends ago and that's exactly how I described it to my husband. It was fine for me as a day trip but certainly not a place I'd make a getaway destination (esp being that you're coming from another big city like I was).
I would've also recommended Charleston and Savannah but they are prob a little hot and touristy in Aug... I've been to Nantucket so that's also a great pick. Like someone else said, a few airlines do fly there. Its so pretty and has good food. But tend to be expensive in summer as it's high season obviously. My final choice is Portland! I think August is prime lobster season and there are soooo many good restaurants and cute shops. Very scenic as well. And it's a short flight from LGA or JFK (about 1.5 hrs total but actual flight time is less than an hour).

@hilsy85: then probably someplace like Kennebunkport would be good! I love to travel and love cities, but August is all about the coast for me! Good luck whatever you decide!

Fire Island?
Vermont?
We love staying here:

Like @travellingbee, I also vote for Quebec City as a great option! It feels like you are in Europe without the transatlantic flight! Food is amazing and it's comfortable weather in August.

@hilsy85: We looked into quebec city too when trying to plan our getaway. As this will likely be the last vacation we have the 2 of us for quite some time, we didn't want to run ourselves ragged being tourists. We just want to relax and be together. In Quebec, I know I'd want to see as much as we could in 3 days.
Chicago is definitely a smaller, cleaner NYC...but I LOVE NYC and wish it was smaller and cleaner
I'd also consider Maine! That is on our short list of places to go.

Portland, ME.
Caribbean is probably more like a 3- or 4-hour flight but might be worth considering anyway.

@hilsy85: perfect! You will love Newport for a no-kids getaway, and it's not too far, and it's totally different from the Catskills! Have a blast!
We are also trying to figure out a 1-2 day getaway for our anniversary!

@BKCaribBaby: yes would love some! We are staying at the Vanderbilt Grace, which I think is close to center of town? Would love recs on things to do, place to eat--either here or you can wall me

@hilsy85: I love Newport. My aunt and uncle live there and it's such a nice spot to be able to getaway to!
If you plan on doing the Mansions; my favorite is Marble House. The Breakers is the largerst, but it's a little too-too - while Marble House just blows me away.
I like the bar Fluke, which is on the wharf so you can watch the sailboats. They have a good selection of cocktails.
I’ve never had an amazing meal in Newport, but most places we’re tried have been fine; so maybe someone else has some suggestions on where to eat.
You should check out the historical society Museum Shops; they have a nice selection of home goods, books and things. Not too kitschy.
There is also a really good gourmet chocolate shop downtown - - I can't remember the name of it, but if you go downtown, I'm sure you can find it!

@yoursilverlining: thank you!! definitely want to do some mansion tours, and the cliff walk for sure.
