.... was the beginning of breastfeeding for your 2nd easy? I am due with my 2nd in January and BF my first for 13 months (weaned a year and a half ago). But the beginning was horrific. I had cracked nipples, terrible latch, thrush, mastitis, nipple shields and then weaning off of them.... It was the hardest part of having a child. Way worse than labor or sleep deprivation. I just want to know what to expect this time. I think I have this unrealistic expectation that it'll be easy-peasy this time because I did it for so long but I'm worried that maybe there is still an adjustment period that I am not setting my expectations up for. So, what was your experience. I specifically wanted to hear from the moms that BF'd a long time, because I think that is a different experience than just a few months.

It was hard for the first week, like toe curling pain again... But I knew where to go for help and resolved all our issues by her second week.

My BFF breastfed both of her kids for 1 year and she had different issues with both kids. The first was reflux and latch issues. She was a new mom, and it just took a long time for her to get comfortable.
With her second, she had a tongue tie, so she had a pretty rough start as well. She also ate a ton more than her first, so the sore/cracked nipples were a big problem even after she got her tongue clipped.

It was painful but I didn't have issues like I did with dd. I still had to use lanolin after every feed and my nipples had to adjust. It stopped hurting around 4 weeks.

It was a million times easier!!! There were still some pain issues, but it wasn't nearly as bad as the first time around.

My 2nd was a breeze compared to my 1st!
I was terrified of breastfeeding my 2nd but when I did have an issue I knew what to do to resolve it quickly which helped a ton!!!

So it sounds like I should still expect some pain for a week or two at least. But barring any medical complication like a tie, it shouldn't be too bad...

It's been super easy, but I had a pretty easy experience with my first, too. With him, we used a shield the entire 13 months, but other than that, it was fairly uncomplicated. I'm 4 weeks in this time and he's able to latch way better than him brother, so no shield. The first week or so was a bit painful, but it didn't last long.

Newborns don't know necessarily know how to latch well (mine didn't) so there was still a learning curve. I knew what supplies to stock up on and how to get help quickly. I was surprised how bad my form was. I was using posture/holds for bigger babies at the beginning. An LC got LO in better position and things improved.

I had a super easy time with my first, but my second was more difficult. Nothing horrible, but lots of pain for a long while (8 ish weeks), needed lanolin for a lot longer too (I still use it sometimes at 4 mo) - LO2 just had a shallower latch and there was nothing I could do to get him deeper - he still does not maintain a deep latch that well.
Also, LO2 had a big appetite and I needed to supplement during the early growth spurts, but my supply has caught up and we haven't supplemented since 6 ish weeks. I never supplemented with LO1 -
No pain second time around here. Never even opened the lanolin.

I still had some pain because I had about an 18 month gap between nursing 1 and 2. But I was wiser and knew the holds better, I knew to be careful and when to pop the latch if it was too bad before damage was done, etc.

Easier for sure. My first was sleepy and a little shell shocked for her first week of life, and she didn't latch on until day 5. I didn't really know what to do to get her to latch, so that didn't help. The second time I knew what to do, so it was much easier. Still having some painful latch issues, but overall everything I learned the first time really helped the second time.

I breastfed for 18 months and weaned near end of first trimester of pregnancy. #2 has been much easier but not pain-free...partially #2 is a better nurser, and partially I knew how to position myself better and how to better manage issues like extreme sleepiness.

It was much, much easier to get going the second time around, but I did get mastitis twice, and I never did with DD1.

With my first it was awful for the first 3 months. With my second we never had a single issue and I didn't even have any pain!

@travellingbee: I had absolutely no issues whatsoever with my second, including no pain at all.
