I'd say Rural, like just outside the suburb we live in now. 10 minutes away from everything we need, but far enough out for the country life.

Rural/small town with a city less than an hour away.

I voted city but for me it's with a twist: I can't deal with apartment living. Portland has been great at fulfilling the best of both worlds for me because it's an awesome city but we also have a big yard with grass and a garden. I lived in NYC for 15 years and I loved it but I would have been unhappy doing so with kids unless we could figure out a way to afford place with a yard and eventually a small cottage. I also love trick or treating and being a short easy drive from the woods and farms. I know people who love raising their kids in the city though. My sister is doing so so hopefully it will go well for her.

If I had limitless money I'd live in the city. I like having a car, being able to park it, having a large living space, and a yard to play in. But I'd also love walkable neighborhoods with shopping and restaurants and parks.
But we don't have unlimited money, so we live in the suburbs.

In a perfect world, it would be mid-sized city, mainly for the walkability aspect. But like pp said, I would need a yard and a good amount of living space.

It seems like a lot of us want that sweet spot between a nice, walkable city, single family homes with yards, and entertainment/ enrichment opportunities. Why can't there be more U.S. cities like this??

@MrsRcCar: ditto! I've always lived in a suburb of a big city. Best of both worlds.

I've been in the city for 13 years now. I'm tired of multi-unit living and bad neighbors. Even without kids, I'd have to find a reasonable home in my neighborhood which wouldn't happen, so burbs still desirable.

I like the space we can afford in the suburbs. If I could plant my property downtown, I'd take it!

A nice old farmhouse with a lot of land, but within 20 minutes to the beach!

We live in Chicago like some others on this thread and love it! But we live in a neighborhood that has a very residential feel with lots of stuff to walk to and green areas. I'd never want to live right downtown. However we'll never be able to afford a single family home with a yard in the city, so we'll probably be heading to the suburbs in a couple of years.
I'd love a second home in a rural area to be able to have a place to visit!
