We bought a nice little metal star to put on top of the tree and after we put it up, the kids were all disappointed that it didn't light up! I guess we've been to a free tree lightings recently, and the stars all lit up... anyway we just laughed and explained that not all stars light up.
It got me wondering though what percentage of trees have light-up stars! Poll below...

We have an angel that doesn't light up.
We actually have a star that lights up too, but we don't use it because it's too heavy and the entire top of the tree tilts to the side when we put it on!

I guess we sort of have a star that kinda lights up? Growing up, we had a star that was cut out of cardboard and wrapped in foil. A tiny hole was cut in the middle so a light from the tree could be poked through to "light" it. The story is that when my parents first got married, they didn't have a lot of money so my dad made this star. And they kept it at the top of the tree ever since. .. going on 41 years. I love that story so DH and I made a similar star to put on our tree.

We have Winnie the Pooh in a santa hat. That's what was on top of my parents' tree and I found an identical one at a thrift store years ago and claimed it for my own tree.

We have a glass angel that perches precariously on the upright branch at the top of the tree. And does not light up.

We have a star that doesn't light up - it's wood and metal, but we arranged a light behind it so it's backlit.

Right now we have a sparkly star but we've recently decided that it kinda blends into the walls of our living room - which is a soft buttery color. We've talked about getting a multi-colored star (think stained glass) but haven't decided on one. I wouldn't mind if it lit up though!

We used to do ribbon at the top of the tree (a big bow) but I always like the topper to light up, so in the dark you can still see it. Growing up we had an angel and I always wanted a star. So when we had kids I got a star and it does light up.

i have a unique life situation, haha. we have a menorah on top of our tree because we celebrate chanukah and xmas! so technically it COULD light up, but we don't light it, because it would set the tree on fire.

I have an angel my aunt made me when I was little at the top.
We only had a light up star on the "kids" tree when I was little. We had a pretty tree with white lights downstairs, and then we'd get a little tree to have upstairs that had twinkling colored lights (and star) and we'd put all the childish ornaments on it.
