Is it a super pain to assemble? Some reviews say 3-4 hours?!?
Can't decide between Kidkraft or ikea kitchen for kids for Christmas.

yes, it was a huge pain. DH didn't even finish it in one evening. but now that it's over, it seems worth it.
ETA. what i found ridiculous about the assembly was how so many pieces could have been put together for us! Like the stove top burners came in like 3 pieces each...WTF. They could have been pre-assembled AND placed in the stove top counter as one piece and packaged like that - why send it in a million pieces?!

I dont think it was that bad? It was definitely complicated, but the instructions were easy to follow.

@loveisstrange: it didn't seem difficult or hard to do, just a pain because so many pieces makes it take so long, and not necessary to send every little minute piece separately.

It took a few hours and a couple of the pieces did not fit together properly so they had to send replacements.

I'd say 5 hours, but clear instructions so it wasn't super difficult, just long.

Yep, took my DH two hours and he's a civil engineer who builds structures for a living!

3-4 hours x several nights. We have the vintage/retro one and that beast was several days, many swears, and at least a bottle of wine and a small breakdown/cry to put together..
I'm not very handy though.

If you get one that is on legs (retro kitchen), use a drill to pre-drill the holes before attaching the base. Or you will learn the hard way that it just won't attach and you won't be able to separate them either and will have to order replacement parts (free but a pain in the butt).

Funny this question came up, I was just thinking about assembling Christmas presents this year and what a nightmare the retro kitchen was to put together. It took my husband almost 4 hours, the night before Christmas. He initially used a power drill, but some of the plastic parts cracked (the stove burner). To kidkraft's credit, they were very good about sending us replacement parts. Anyway, I regret not spending a little more and getting Pottery Barn kids floor model that was for sale at our store or the Plan Toys kitchen, which I hear is easier to assemble.

it took less time and effort to put together and install a real life ikea kitchen. the kid kraft took us about 4 hours of cursing and throwing parts around. annoying thing! kid loves it though hehe

My husband put ours together, and our kidkraft dollhouse.
He's a biomedical engineer.
He said building these two things was worse than any final he ever took lol

@Mrs. Jump Rope: super. my husband is an engineer also, i'll be pissed if he cuts corners like he did when he assembled our tv stand and now it is missing a shelf!
I want to go for the ikea play kitchen, but with no fridge, where does the food go?

Yes, it took four hours, and a bunch of parts are missing (door handles so half the kitchen can't be used) and KidKraft customer service have been appalling, seriously. We won't get those new parts until January.

@matador84: LOL mine didn't cut corners but he did have a few choice words and has officially banned all things kidkraft from our house.

We found it easy. Took maybe an hour. It's three years old and gets a ton of use but still is in great condition!
Full disclosure, husband is an engineer but I helped and we were never confused or had any trouble.

@Mrs. Jacks: I'm going to get one AND regulate on the assembly of it! My way or highway on this one.

@Smurfette: Lol after reading this thread I told DH maybe he should start putting it together on the 23rd.

@lawbee11: we won't be home till late on the 24th so we have to do it early and hide it.

It's definitely something you shouldn't wait to do the night before Christmas!

It wasn't so bad! Was pretty boring but the instructions were pretty helpful.

I'm very handy (think redoing floors and fixing walls and everything in between) and that darn kitchen took me 2.5 hours to assemble!

@SugarplumsMom: this thread def got me thinking about doing it a few days ahead of time!

Took DH 3 hours as well. It wasn't hard but he just wanted to make sure he did everything right in the correct order. And there are a million little pieces so he wanted to be extra careful.
pomelo / 5628 posts
We just put a sheet over it while working on it...LO didn't notice.

I have one in a box in the office. It will be interesting to see how long it takes.
