Did you use a bed rail on the big bed? Still trying to decide if we are going to purchase a second crib for baby number 2 or move DS to a bigger bed and I don't really want to have to buy one of those ugly add on rails if we move to a big bed, but I also don't want to purchase a "toddler bed." He's two and I'm wondering how big of a concern falling out of bed would be.

We moved DS1 into a twin shortly after he turned two. He fell out of bed the first night (whoops!) and we just tucked a small long throw pillow under the fitted sheet. I've seen the same thing done with a pool noodle (tucked under the fitted sheet) but it was out of season so we couldn't find any noodles. Over a year later and we still have the pillow tucked in there! Ha But it's done the trick!

My son has only fallen out like twice! Does your LO flail a lot in his sleep? Mine rolls around a little bit but not that much. I think putting pillows on the ground and kind of as a wall helps. My mom used to put stuffed animals under the fitted sheet when I was little.

We moved my son from a crib to a double bed, and he fell out the first night, and that was it. We used a bed barrier thing for about 2 or 3 nights then stopped. He's totally fine now and wakes up every morning completely starfished in the middle of the bed!

@mrsbubbletea: He doesn't really flail around a lot, but he does tend to end up scrunched against the rail.
I like the pillow/pool noodle suggestions, I think that would work great!

I bought these, and I love them! My LO went right from a crib to a queen bed at 3, and I was worried because she was always all over her crib. These go under the sheets like a pool noodle but they're a little bigger and softer. My LO totally lays up against them so I feel like if they weren't there she might fall out.

We use mesh crib rails with a full size mattress. I don't care if they are ugly. I'd rather no injuries (we have hardwood floors).

@Mae: I haven't seen those before! Do they make it hard for her to climb over to get out of bed in the morning?

@Mae: We have those too. DS has no trouble getting over them when he wants/needs to get out of bed. He has fallen out of the bed before - they weren't high enough and somehow he managed to vault himself around them. The bed looks weird when made but that's to be expected. I don't think aesthetically they are any better than the rails, we just wanted something he could easily get around.. The only big complaint is I have trouble getting my pregnant self over them, but that's probably just me

@Jennibenni: No, but she's 3 so she's pretty much more coordinated than I am at this point lol. My biggest annoyance with them is that sometimes when she's getting out of bed she will kind of push them over the edge (they don't strap down, they have non-stick stuff on the bottom but still can slide over the edge of the mattress) so I end up having to fix them a couple times a week before bed. But she's never pushed it over the edge in her sleep, never rolled over them, never had an issue (knock wood). She rolls into them and stops. Or sometimes pivots and uses one of them as a pillow lol. They are pretty soft.

DS has a really low bed because it was a convertible crib. DS kind of slid off the bed once and was sleeping half on half off. I went in and fixed him and he slept right through it. Other than that, no problems.

We are using a rolled up blanket under the fitted sheet, and an old feather bed on the floor next to the bed. She fell out twice the second or third night after the switch (even with the rolled blanket) but hasn't fallen out since. I think her body just needed to learn how to sleep in a bed with edges. I really didn't want a bed rail because we are using the Ikea kura bed and it is hard enough to get in and out of with the top rails. Didn't want to add an obstacle.

My son's bed is open on both sides, it's near the wall, but not flush with it and we still use a mesh rail on the side near the wall because he tends to sleep on that edge, literally.

We moved straight to a full mattress on the floor a bit after his 2nd birthday. After a few weeks we put the box Spring under it. No rails. He hasn't fallen out yet

We went right to a twin bed, no rails or anything. He hasn't fallen out - or not that I know of!

We went straight to a twin bed at 2.5 and tried a noodle type solution (his old crib bumpers underneath the fitted sheet). He vaulted over it the second night so we switched to a mesh rail. I hate how it looks, but I like sleep more. I at least found a grey one that "matches" as well as anything.

We went straight to a full size bed, without rails, and he hasn't fallen out of it (moved him at 22 months, and he's been in it for 3 months now.) He DID fall out the first time he slept in a twin bed (while we were staying at a house on vacation) but he didn't have any problems after that.

We did a twin with no rail. Our twins are very low to the ground though (like 12ish inches). We have wood floors so I put some pillows and a small mattress on the floor next to the bed. My DS only fell out once and my DD maybe 2-3 times.

You can use just a boxspring and a twin mattress without an an actual bedframe or bed for awhile. It is pretty low to the ground and easy for kids to get in and out. If you're concerned about injuries, Ikea makes a padded gym mat that's like $15 that I think would cushion a fall pretty well. I'd put the bed flush against a corner and get a body pillow of some kind. Some people I know give their kids their Snoogle!
