I'd be happy in a long term multi generational households. Due to a perfect storm of events, we moved in with my in laws for 2 years after I'd lived independently for a decade (across multiple countries). I was prepared for the worst and felt pretty low, but it turned out to be one of the best living situations. I had DD there (part of the perfect storm) and she benefitted tremendously being with her grandparents all the time. The wisdom I gained from them is awesome.
I guess I see the idea of starting on your own as purely cultural and see huge benefit in the opposite..

No...... I can not imagine that. DH is adamant about DS "out of the house" after he goes to college and I feel very much the same. I do understand there is a possibility and it may not be his fault, but I just can not envision it. I think DH would downsize and move away as soon as DS goes to college. LOL
ETA: Both DH and I moved away from our respective families / countries when we went to college. And we have taken care of ourselves financially / lived independently since we graduated.
