mine was a happy spitter, so no signs of pain or discomfort for the most part.
She was diagnosed by the frequent vomiting, wet burps and inflamed throat, and because elevating her after meals and whatnot worked. We decided not to use meds and she had reflux until about 18 months.
ETA that since there were no signs of discomfort or specific food triggers, we didn't even consider a food allergy or whatnot.

Obvious discomfort after feedings was a giveaway for mine. She would twist her head, arch her back, cry, and her breath would be acidic. Spitup is another indicator, though not as reliable of one, since babies can reflux without spitup. A doc would check for throat redness, since reflux irritates the esophagus. We did meds until my daughter was 4 months old and she was a happy spitter until 10 months.

Back arching, lots of projectile spit up, hiccups constantly, crying immediately after eating.

He was diagnosed while in NICU but he has similar symptoms - back arching, hiccups (did not know this was a symptom!) much happier sleeper in inclined setting (swing, and I just bought the rock n play for him) - not on meds yet but thinking about asking for it at the next dr's visit (she had mentioned he may benefit from it but we decided to give it a little time).

nonstop hiccups, spit-up and crying, spitting up like 2 hrs after she ate and crying

If she was awake, she was screaming. She would spit up a LOT and it would sometimes be an hour after she ate (it smelled like sour milk instead of just spit up).

It's hard because I know from the first time that so many of the symptoms between a gassy baby, reflux and food intolerance are so similar.
Her screaming has escalated in the past week. She will be sleeping, be totally fine and wake up screaming, looking like she's in pain. She screams throughout the day but I think it's more from overtired. She won't nap lately unless it's in someone's arm. Or it's much later in the afternoon.
About when her screaming escalated is also when she started spitting up more. More than M did but I'm not sure if I would classify it as projectile vomit either!
Seems the only for sure sign is a red throat??
I'll monitor for another day or so. If she starts spitting up more I'll ask to bring her in before the weekend.

My ped was also able to hear the acid coming back up her esophagus after eating

Our ped said all babies have reflux and they only worry about it if there is a weight gain (or other major) issue.

They put E on Zantac and the screaming stopped by the second day. It was freaking amazing. I hope you get some relief soon.

@regberadaisy: I've never even heard of a doc checking the throat. Reflux does not need to = spitting up. My lo had Silent Reflux (gurgling or small spit up was common). The symptoms for us were arching and not wanting to eat and/or wanting to start eating, but then stopping because it hurt. So for us, almost everything centered around feeding difficulties and aversion.

Screaming while eating- taking a bottle took about an hour. She also had a lot of regurgitation, back arching, and hiccups. Prevacid was a life saver.

Can they suddenly get reflux? Like a previously happy baby suddenly starts spitting up and crying about 2 he's after a feeding? Or since it came on during week 4 maybe more of a food intolerance of something I ate.

@T.H.O.U.: that's a great question.
I'm more inclined to think A doesn't have reflux. Because she doesn't always scream after a feeding. I would think if she does she would after all if not most feedings?

Do your kids w reflux spit up after every feeding? Do symptoms occur at every feeding?
hostess / wonderful grape / 20803 posts
T had silent reflux. Fighting nursing/ fighting the bottle, eating frequently but not large quantities, rarely falling asleep eating, arching back and being angry during and after feedings. Zantac didn't help but Prilosec did.

@regberadaisy: Tyler didn't scream after all feedings - especially not after ones in the evening or night.

My LO never screamed after feedings, only during. She also spit up sporadically, and never projectile vomited. Primarily she was diagnosed because of a history of eating a little then arching/screaming which became complete food refusal, and because she had a tendency to spit up hours after she ate, and cry when she spit up.

We had screaming and non-stop spit-up after all meals. Back arching, obvious pain, and overeating. Ped said that was common because nursing was comforting, so he would want to nurse, but then would fill up too much and would make the situation worse.
