Honestly, I didn't think it would be. I got one because a lot of people kind of talked me into it. I still wasn't convinced right after L was born but it soon became a place we spent a LOT of time in. I even thought about getting rid of it after we weaned, and then L got sick and I had to go in his room a few times in the night to cuddle him and ended up right back in that chair rocking him to sleep.

I have now decided I'll get rid of it after we get him a big boy bed so that I can lay with him, but otherwise, I can't crawl into the crib with him (and he gets too wiggly in our bed), so cuddling in the chair is the best place.

For us, a glider was a godsend. We had it in the living room though, and if we had had it in the nursery, it wouldn't have been used much. I know that might be different for others, but something to think about - you might want to invest in a chair that looks good enough to have out in your living room. You can also justify the expense that way too, since other guests would be using it

ETA: one of the most important bits of advice I got re: chairs was to get one with a high enough back so you can rest your head too. We've used our chair to hold LO upright so she can sleep when she's been sick, and if I had had nothing to rest my head on too, that would have been a no-go.

@loki: I have the same one as @lawbee11: and I can attest that it's not the most comfortable. You would definitely need a pillow or something for your lower/mid back... (at least I sure did!)

For our first, it was absolutely necessary because we couldn't get her to close her eyes without rocking her. I didn't use it at all with my second. It's hard to say!

I say yes! We still use it every night at 20 months, to read books before bed. And if she happens to wake up in the middle of the night, we use it to rock her to settle her back done. But the first year, it was a god-send in the MOTN

My LO was not a fan of the rocker. It was the only place she would wiggle out of my arms in and basically refuse to chill out. We spent a lot of time on the couch or on a bed (that was in her nursery).

Basically, it is a crapshoot in my opinion, just like almost all baby gear.

I didn't get one at first but then ended up buying one when LO was about 3mo. Whether you're bf or ff, you need somewhere hella comfortable for night feeding/soothing! We still use ours at bedtime at 11mo, got it second hand on eBay for £50

A glider was essential for us. My baby loves motion and loved to be rocked.

@loki: We have a best chair from BBB. It doesn't look like a baby glider, more like a regular chair. So we were ok spending more since it will go in another room when it is time to move out of her room.

If you're on the fence, I'd wait and see what your baby is like. We didn't get one and really didn't need one in the first few months (although looking back, I probably would have used it if we had it). In our case, we simply didn't have the room for one. We got a small armchair instead which I used for MOTN nursings. It isn't as nice as a glider, but it is comfy enough (plus it doesn't look like baby furniture so I have no problem keeping it around later on).

I say get one! Even when DD was sleeping in our room the first few months we used it quite a bit. Once she was in her room we used it even more. My only regret is that the back doesn't support my head, but overall NOT a huge issue.

We didn't want to spend a lot either so we got a cheap (ish) upholstered chair from Ikea and added a rocking base that we bought off of Amazon (or you could do a glider base, too). Once we're done using it in her room we can put the wooden legs on it and use it in the living room which justified the cost for us. It cost us $250 total, but you could do it even cheaper if you buy a chair that isn't brand new and/or using the rocking mechanism off of an existing chair.

Yes! I use it half as much as most moms and I still think it's invaluable. I've actually had to sleep in it when Sadie was hella sick and couldn't lay flat. She slept sitting up, laying on my chest. I was extremely grateful for a comfy rocker and ottoman that night.

We hardly used ours at first, since she was in our room. But, once we moved her to the nursery at 4 months, it gets used every single night (at least once if not more) for MOTN feedings. I don't think it's absolutely necessary for everyone, but depending on how your house is set up and where you'll be feeding her, etc. it may be nice to have.

We didn't have a glider/rocker for the first 8 months of DS's life. That being said, we lived in a tiny one bedroom condo and didn't have the room for it. I fed him on the couch or in our bed. If he was fussy, we bounced him on a yoga ball.

When we bought a house and he got his own room, we put a chair in there and we use it every night to read books before bed. But I don't think it's necessarily better because it rocks. We just need a chair. Now that we're pregnant with #2, we'll get another chair to put in the nursery for nursing.

So, I guess my point is that it all depends on your space and where you plan on nursing. You can definitely get by without one but it's a nice to have.

Nope, you don't need one. We did fine without it, and the kid didn't care if he was being rocked, as long as he got something to eat That said, I had a rocker when I was a girl, and they're sooooo comfy! If you have the room, get one just so you can relax in it!

@loki: Sadie is almost 2 now, and we use it every night. We snuggle up in her rocker for story time before bed. We picked one from BRU that matched the nursery... I don't even know the brand. It's a sky blue velvet. We were lucky that our parents when it on it together. We wouldn't have been able to afford it otherwise. Do you have a local yard sale page or other Craigslist-type page where you can look? My mom found a super nice one for my SIL on a yard sale facebook page. It was barely used, super plush, and only $150.
