In your opinion, do you think that taking a trip to WDW is worth it? Does the cost match up with the experience?

100% yes! I've been twice (once as a child and once as an adult). I can't wait to take DD.

For us, yes it was worth it. Was it expensive and a splurge?... sure. We tried to cut costs by staying in a budget resort (Art of Animation) only doing a weekend trip Friday - Monday and going before LO turned 3 so we didnt have to pay for her park ticket. We managed our expectations and friday was travel/check-in/pool/disney springs, Saturday was Magic Kingdom, Sunday - Epcot, and Monday we just did birthday character breakfast and travel. We had just moved 2 months before and I was about 6m pregnant so we had kinda rocked our LO's world this year. It was nice to get away to a place we knew she would love (she's a total princess) for a few days and have some family time just the 3 of us. We also celebrated her 3rd birthday on the last day we were there. 2+ months later she still talks about it all the time - the rides, the characters, the airplane, the cupcakes, her treasures she brought home (souvenirs)

It depends...it would not be worth it to take my son now, he's not interested in Disney stuff and he's too young to appreciate Epcot and Hollywood Studios. I think it's worth it if you want an all inclusive, magic experience. Disney is fantastic at weaving the fantasy into the entire experience and their customer service is top notch.

I think the experience matches up to the cost. You get what you pay for at Disney. Whether it's worth it or not is another question; and entirely an individual one.

For me? Absolutely. There are ways to make it more cost effective, but for the most part, that requires planning. If you love planning then WDW lends itself beautifully to that (planning your meals in advance to get dining reservations at popular restaurants, planning your fast passes in advance to get on the most popular rides with low waits, planning the right time of year and understanding that certain times of the year will have high crowd levels and/or the chance for interesting weather, researching resorts to see what best fits your family, etc).
If you prefer to fly by the seat of your pants you can still do Disney, but just know that you need to adjust your expectations to match. You may not get into that super popular restaurant. You may not get to ride the Frozen ride at Epcot without a 1.5 hour wait. You can still have an amazing experience.
We took my daughter just as she turned 3 years old and she's still talking about it months later :). Absolutely worth it, and I would do it again in a heartbeat.

What @strawberrybee said. I think you get out of it what you put in. If you don't plan well, don't show up at the parks early and stick to your plan, and have appropriate expectations (i.e. it's impossible to do everything, take time for naps, breaks, etc.) then I think it's so worth it.
But I think if you just go, don't really plan, don't take breaks or don't follow your kid's schedule... it's gonna be a bad time.
I haven't taken my son yet (15 months) but we live 3 hours away from WDW and used to go all the time. I love it.

It was worth it for DH and I but my son said it was boring and he only liked the pool at the hotel, so.....
He totally had a blast when we were there and loved meeting characters but we'll wait a few years before going back!

Agree that planning and knowing the park is key!
We live in FL so we can get some good deals. We did 4 days for $500 for the family this spring.
Assuming a roughly $100 ticket price, I still think its worth it.
Think about how much you would pay for tickets to see Disney on Ice or a Character theater show in your hometown? $25 a ticket? One day at disney and you can easily see 4 quality shows/parades that make the ticket "worth it". Add on a few awesome rides (3 fast passes!). We limit our food spending and other items (no souvenirs etc).
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
@T.H.O.U.: That's a really good way to think about the cost of the ticket!
eta: It's really difficult for me to limit my spending on souveniers, though, and my husband doesn't skimp on food, so we're the perfect storm of unnecessary spending!

@petunia354: That's exactly what I'm afraid of. That we could "get away" with just going two hours away to an indoor water park (Great Wolf Lodge), and they would be just as happy!
wonderful clementine / 24134 posts
@looch: I had a family member who totally used to break down the cost of the day. He would rate the ride and estimate how much he would have 'paid' to ride. It amazes me that people will pay crazy amounts of money for fair rides ($5 a ride?!?!) but think the $100 ticket price is too high for disney with good quality actual real rides.

LOOOOOOVE it!! There are ways to do it cheaper with planning. Worth saving for or working side jobs to cover costs.
eggplant / 11824 posts
@T.H.O.U.: funny you compare it to the cost for tickets to Disney on Ice/Disney Live - we just went to Disney Live last week and the tickets were $87 per person with ticketmaster fees. We are going to WDW next month and after the Disney Live show my husband goes "so how much did we just pay for the same thing we'll see for free at WDW next month??"
That said, the 4 day trip next month will cost us over $3k (including air) so whether it's "worth it" is still in the eye of the beholder. Obv I think it's worth it!
wonderful clementine / 24134 posts
@yoursilverlining: Wow! Yea my mom said I should take our kids to Sesame Street Live when it came to our town. I couldn't believe how expensive tickets were. I would much rather save and drive to disney!

I can't speak to Disney World but I have never seen my LO happier than when we were on our Disney cruise. Worth every penny IMO. Disney is pricey but the service is amazing. So now I can't wait to take her to Disney World in a couple of years. I'm planning to use miles to pay for the flights and points to pay for the hotel, so I don't anticipate it being ridiculously expensive.

100% YESSSSS! Firm believer in the magic of Disney. It is expensive, travel times vary in crowd size. Do your research, plan it all out, check crowd predictors. We try to go very 2 years to either WDW or DL.
Oldest is 13, youngest is about to be 4 (She talks about it all the time, she remembers, calls it "her castle")

@lawbee11: I am trying to save pennies now for a Disney Cruise!

My parents live close to WDW so we had the advantage of going just for the day when we're down there.
I think it depends on your kids' ages. When our daughter was 2 (and probably this year at 3 too) Hollywood Studios was 100% worth it. Smaller crowds, she LOVED the Frozen sing-along and the Disney Junior show, she got to meet Minnie and Mickey and go to lunch where Sofia and Doc walked around and met all the kids.
Magic Kingdom was fun and she liked it, but not as much as she loved Hollywood Studios.

@Bao: LO has been to local parks and to Disney and she is way happier at Disney. We were there last week and the joy on her face was worth every single penny.
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21628 posts
@Rescuemom10: @T.H.O.U.: your kids will love it! We are going to go again in late 2019 or early 2020.

With every penny. But - lo and I are diehard Disney fans. it's not just a regular park or fair - it's Disney!
cantaloupe / 6885 posts
Yes, worth every penny. I have the best childhood memories going there with my family, and it is so special to bring my own children now.
We took my daughter last year at 2.5 and she adored it. I was surprised at how much she got out of it that young. She talks about it nearly every day. We are taking her again this March and I can't wait to see her face when we tell her we are going !

Yes, worth it. My husband swore up and down when we moved to Florida that we weren't going to get annual passes, he thought the cost was outrageous, etc. But we came by free tickets for a few months and he got hooked - we are now passholders. We have a 3.5 year old, a soon to be 2 year old, and a third on the way, and we go at least once a month. We've stayed a few times overnight as well, which is even better. It does take planning and it's not relaxing, but it's fun and super magical for kids, their experiences and memories (they talk about it all the time) make it 100% worth it.
wonderful clementine / 24134 posts
@keepcalmcarrie: yea for another FL bee. Where are you at? We are up north about 4 hours from Disney
persimmon / 1096 posts
@T.H.O.U.: We're near Melbourne, on the Atlantic coast (about an hour east of Orlando). Northern FL is so pretty! I'm originally from the northeast and I am missing winter weather right now though! I always feel differently in March, of course

I would say yes it's definitely worth it. But, we will wait until our kids are older. I've only gone once when I was in late elementary school and loved it. I still remember being there and things we did. It was so much fun. Disney does things wonderfully and we have family that still go every year as adults. But for us, we won't be able to do multiple Disney vacations and I would prefer to go when our kids are older and can remember the experience more and have some more flexibility (no naps, early bedtime, etc) And to speak to what you said about getting away with doing a more local waterpark... we took our kids to a water park a few hours away from us for a few days and they LOVED it. They still talk about it months later and had a wonderful time. My parents were with us and when we got there the place felt almost "Disney-ish" with the atmosphere.

Yes, worth it! We live about 8 hours from Orlando, and recently took our kids. LOVE it! It's definitely a splurge, and even with staying in my in-laws' time share, we still spent quite a bit. My kids weren't altogether interested in the characters, but loved the rides and all the things to do. We were fortunate to be gifted extra fast passes while in the park, which made it possible for us to do many of the things we wanted. We also loved Kennedy Space Center, which I didn't expect. I knew my eldest son and husband would love it, but I didn't expect to enjoy it (except by watching them have fun) - the reality was that we all had a LOT of fun there : ).

@tlynne: I'm glad to hear you and the boys liked KSC. They've done a lot to improve it and although its really expensive I do think it has some neat value.

It was worth it for us. We went last year with an almost 3 year old and a 1 year old and I was surprised how much they loved it. In fact, we were ata Christmas parade Sunday and my 3 year old asked if we could go the parade with Tinkerbell again. He then reminisced about it for a good ten minutes. I was surprised how much he remembered!

We don't like crowds and try to steer clear of most Disney stuff (though I did introduce my son to Mary Poppins this weekend). My son is almost three and has no idea about most things Disney. So to us it will not be worth it unless/until he is older and really pushes it. Even then I would probably try to limit it to a weekend visit because I would not want to spend much paid time off at a theme park.
pineapple / 12566 posts
Based on prices I've seen, probably not. In any case, my kids are barely into Disney and DH and I aren't interested at all. We like to travel and it seems like that money would go much further elsewhere.
nectarine / 2085 posts
@ElbieKay: I agree.
I actually quite like a lot of the older Disney movies and LO has seen a number of them (he's 6), but my dislike of lines and crowds and most of the other things that go along with theme parks is enough of a reason to stay away. The fairly hefty price tag is just the nail in the coffin. I've got other places I want to show LO.

@Trailmix: Same. Looks like we're in the minority, ha. I will say I did a cruise (not by choice) and it was a much better experience than the parks. Ugh, the parks. No thanks.
pomegranate / 3127 posts
If you're prepared to deal with the crowds and the weather, and the kids will still have a good time, yes... I wouldn't go with very young kids that aren't crazy about Disney. The lines are very long, it's ridiculously hot if you're there in the summer, and it's expensive - but probably no more expensive than a regular amusement park. I was there as a teen because relatives from abroad wanted to see it. We might take the kids one day, but not anytime soon.
