I don't think that's too young at all. He's actually just at the end of the ideal age window according to the Oh Crap potty training method.

Because of my son's lack of language I was nervous about potty training. We started at 2.5 and although he did wonderfully at home we just now stopped pullups when traveling and he's doing great! I say go for it!

We are in a similar boat. DS will be 3 in November and daycare suggested for us to start some training and he seemed intrigued by the other daycare kids. We have him sit on the toilet every night before bath and he pees almost every time and has for a while. He's pooped 3x as well. He goes at daycare 1-2x daily. However, he has a motor speech disorder. We taught him the sign for potty and he has used it a couple times, but we have to prompt him 99% of the time. About a month ago we tried undies and bare butt time but he would just pee and get super upset, but then way more upset when we tried to make it fun and run to the potty to finish. So, we've shelved it for a bit. My gut says he's not ready yet so I'm going to wait and try no diaper again in a few weeks and see if any different. For now, we are going to prompt him to sit and go more than just before bath, and I keep telling him he could get rid of the diaper changes he HATES by learning to go on the potty. Earlier on we also got a bunch of books from the library and that REALLY made him interested and consistently want to sit and go...he gets a chocolate chip every time he goes, so there's that too!

ETA: we also thought about doing the 3 day method this long weekend! But I'm just not feeling he's ready for that big jump.

I'm sure I could have forced it at 2.5 but my ped strongly recommends not forcing (3 day or oh crap) and waiting till 3yo when they're physically and mentally more ready and willing.
My son will be 3 next week and while he's not fully trained he CAN (if he wakes up dry we make him pee in the potty, which is nearly every morning and nap) and I KNOW he's ready otherwise. In fact we have started spending time without a diaper if he wakes up dry and won't pee right away - and he hasn't had an accident yet, he just holds it till he can't anymore and then uses the potty. He also holds his poop if he has no diaper and we finally got him to go on the potty because we refused to put on a diaper.

We will do a "boot camp" right after 3 but only because we're halfway there and I know he's fully ready and just needs the push. If I had any doubts I still wouldn't do it.

@codeitall: i trained DD at 27 months with a version of 3 Day method but it worked because she was super ready, not the method. I work in early childhood and I really believe that if they are ready, it will work regardless of method (as long as there is consistency) and if they are not ready the reverse is true.

So I would like to know what DS thinks? Does he seem interested/motivated?

For DD this looked like:
-asking for undies
-telling us she wanted to learn
-having some success with sitting and peeing and pooping on the potty in short stints
-staying dry for 30 minutes at a time at daycare
-telling us when she was going to poop

My DS is now 25 months and I would love to be down with diapers, but he is not showing any signs. He will sit on the potty for a nanosecond with the promise of a sticker but has not peed. He does not seem to care. So I will wait for him. Don't know if that helps!

Also, 3 day doesn't *have* to be a long weekend. We picked up from daycare a little early on a Friday afternoon (3ish?) and counted that as day 1 and it worked!

From my understanding, he's not too young (fyi, daycare and I are working on potty training DD at 16mos), it's more a matter of whether he's receptive to it right now. Kids go through stages where they're more aware and interested in potty issues, and it can be harder to get them on board with potty training if they're not in one of those developmental stages.
