My sister was kind enough to share a lot of her son's clothes, so Charlie's actually wearing a lot of hand-me-downs!
I love that, because clothes cost a small fortune and babies grow up so darn quick that it seems like a waste.
If I could do it again, I would buy very little clothes and just borrower hand-me-down from our friends. In fact, that may be exactly what we do with baby #2!

We've gifted our niece and nephew with a lot of new clothing because my sisters didn't have a lot of access to hand-me-downs. I figure it's an investment for our future LOs!
They grow up so quickly that I definitely think borrowing is the way to go.

My daughter is 5 months old and I've bought 2 pieces of clothing for her. We had some bought for us for our baby-shower but the majority came to us from hand me downs. I work in a toddler classroom at a daycare and a few of my parents have been very generous with their LO's hand me downs. It also helps that my parents own their own thrift store and set stuff aside for me on a regular basis.

Almost all of my daughter's clothes are new, store-bought or were given to us as purchased gifts. Amongst our group of friends and even amongst family, I am the first to have a baby so there is nobody to hand anything down to me! I'll be the one handing things down to others, I guess!

Probably 95% hand me downs from my sister. I'm so fortunate for her generosity because like you said clothes are a small fortune! Another 3 or 4% are gifts we've been given, so we've bought very little.

Most of my son's clothes are mostly new but gifted to us by very generous family and friends. We recently started buying him new clothes for the colder weather. Most people like to buy summer outfits, leaving us with very little fall/winter gear. .

None of DS's clothes are hand-me-downs, there was no one to give us anything (I would have happily accepted them though).
For the first 6 months, DS wore pretty much only one piece sleep and play pajamas from Carters. When they got wrecked, I donated them.

When LO comes we'll have hand me downs out the wazoo! Two of my best friends are pg and one is having a boy, one is having a girl, they've already promised me hand me downs. Plus my MIL is already planning Christmas gifts...she's going to flip out on presents since we're her only hope for a grand child for a LONG time...we hope anyway, haha (DH's little sister is still in high school) so she's pretty darned excited.

We have gotten literally hundreds of hand me downs. We have the luxury of being able to sift through them all and come out with an entire wardrobe of play clothes. We do buy a few nice things for each size and season, and pajamas usually don't last more than 1 kid since they're worn and washed so often. The best hand-me-downs tend to be things like snowpants, rain boots, rain coats, etc. since they don't get too worn out and tend to be expensive!

This is one of the things I'm most grateful for with Chickie -- I think over the course of her 22 month life, we've bought her several pairs of shoes, a couple of funny onesies, and an outfit for her first birthday. Everything else was gifted or hand-me-downs, and we just got another huge bag of 2T-5T stuff so we're still goin' strong. It helps that my mom has a thrift store addiction.

we get occasional hand me downs from relatives, but we were first among our close family and friends to have a baby. I have to say that I am really enjoying shopping for my son now that my nephew has arrived because I often have him in mind too when I shop for something. It takes the sting out of the price tag a bit, but I get some amazing things second hand at stores like once upon a child and the children's orchard. You have to look around a bit more, but for casual things for daycare that you know will get destroyed anyway, I think it has saved us a ton of $. I sold to one once, but didn't think it was worth my while. I'd much prefer friends and family to benefit

When it's our turn, we won't have anybody around for hand-me-downs, so we'll probably do a lot of second-hand store stuff, just washed really well. Because babies grow so quickly, most baby clothes at thrift stores are relatively unusued, so it shouldn't be too weird.

I wish I had hand-me-downs. None of friends had little girl clothing so most of my LO's clothes are bought. However, almost 80% of them were purchased off Craigslist for pennies on the dollar. Better yet, a lot of them were name brands and were in excellent condition, not to mention super cute
I've saved some of my favorite outfits (in case I have another girl) but the bulk of these I passed on my SIL who has a little girl 4 mos younger than mine.

Hand me downs from his cousin...although that's getting harder - they're different seasons...and a TON of thrift store stuff that my MIL finds in Pittsburgh...as in, she goes in once a week and clears them out of all the 'good' stuff and then sends it to us

Mavi was the first boy in the family. So we had no choice but to get a lot of new clothes. We did have a friend give us some clothes in the earlier stages so that was nice.
I don't my thrift shopping though.
