Last year we just wrapped a blanket around A and carried her to the car. She is now walking, and with two LO's I need her to walk from point A to point B. I need something that will keep her warm but possibly something that can be used in her car seat as well. I know it has to be relatively thin, so any suggestions? We are on a budget so something less than $40 is preferable.

I think fleece jackets are the best bet. I think you can find them at an outlet for around $40ish dollars. I think that's really the only thing that's car seat approved!

Good question. MIL just got this coat for C and I think it's OK for the carseat, but if any one thinks otherwise please say so! It's quilted and not super thick.

@Foodnerd81: I have no clue what's too thick, I mean I know a regular coat is too thick but when it comes to hoodies/jackets I'm not sure! That is cute though.

@Bao: I got a cute winter coat at Target on clearance that has the zip-out fleece inside coat and the waterproof puffy outer shell. What about something like that? She can wear the fleece part in the car seat and you can slip on the outer she'll after you pull her out if the seat if you are going to be outside long.

It is really more about how much it will compress than the thickness, I believe. If you pinch it and your fingers get a lot closer, it isn't going to be safe in a carseat. That is why fleece is a good material.

@Bao: I think that looks fine because there really isn't material to compress. It's also good for snowy/rainy as it won't hold moisture so that's good!

I got C a wool pea coat. It's not super thick, but it's warm since its 100% wool.

Old navy sells fleece jackets that are no thicker than a sweater or sweatshirt and we used one of those, and then always kept a winter coat in the car, and a blanket. We tried to have the car warmed before bringing him out as well
I think a good trick to find out if it's too thick and put them in the car seat with it on, then with it off and compare the difference - is there slack in the straps with it off? Then it's probably too thick.

We use the Patagonia down sweater jacket - it's down but compresses to basically nothing.

@Bao: I kind of prefer hoodless since it gets bunched up behind A's head if she takes it off. I would totally buy that north face jacket if I wasn't going out of town and not able to get it when it arrived. I also don't know about 2t vs 3t which is why I haven't bought any fall/winter clothes yet. 2t fits perfect but 3t is pretty big!

We used a Columbia Fleece zip up hooded jacket. It is pretty light but warm enough for our winters here.
I found it at Nordstrom Rack for around $20.

I'm currently using the Columbia Snowtop II Bunting - its winter in Australia, and its fairly mild in comparison to the US.
I ordered it from backcountry, it was on sale at about $20, it fits my tall 18mo perfectly with room to spare - very very warm, the hoodie is perfect as little fingers can't get it off, and it keeps her so cozy she fell asleep in the car seat. Not puffy and its safe for car seat use.
