We are going to road trip to KS City, MO with our 4 and 3 year old this summer. DH will be at a work conference during the day so I'll be on my own with the kids, looking for something fun to do.

@matador84: I don't live there, but grew up going there often to visit family. As a kid I loved the zoo, Royals games, Kaleidoscope (a place run by Hallmark where you create art projects), and Science City - an interactive science museum for kids - super fun! Country Club Plaza is also a nice place to walk around and shop.

We lived there for 17 years and I second the zoo, but bring a stroller because there is a ton of walking. Fritz's restaurant in Crown Center is cool, the food is delivered by toy train. The Deanna Rose Children's Farmstead is fun. Worlds of Fun has a good small kid ride area. Country Club plaza is nice, let your kids play in the fountains. The Steamboat Arabia Museum is really interesting, but we went before we had kids, I can't remember if it had kid activities.

Wonderscope, Deanna Rose, the zoo, the sculpture gardens at the Nelson, the downtown library, Loose Park, Penguin Park, and Crown Center are my first thoughts. What do you like to do?

@MrsSRS: anything will be exciting for them! We live in a town where there aren't a ton of kid friendly places to go, so anything that keeps them engaged will be exciting!

@matador84: After you go, let me know what you loved/didn't love. My SIL is about to move there, so I know we'll take some trips with the kids there, & I'd love to have some ideas of what was a hit with you and the kids.

Ok, well my first answers are the less pricy things to do, (except the zoo - you will need a stroller, but you can rent one).
More expensive-I second the people who said: the aquarium at crown center, worlds of fun, science city, and some of the pools and water parks are great.
I'm not sure I would brave a Royals game solo with two kids, but the t-bones sell tickets to their stadium and you can go sit in the grass past the outfield and play on the playground and buy hotdogs (and watch baseball) without having assigned seats. My kids also like going to IKEA to play in the playplace, and riding the carousel, having lunch, and running around at Oak Park mall.

I agree with all of the other recs. You can rent a stroller at the zoo if you don't bring your own. Deanna Rose is a bit south of all of the other things but it's really cheap and it's big enough to spend all morning or all afternoon but not so big that you get worn out. Playground areas, animals, a barn, garden, and you can fish, do pony rides, or mine for rocks. Easy to handle 2 kids alone there. My 3 year old is a runner so walking around the Plaza, she'd have to be in a good (listening) mood for me to handle her alone there. Good for eating, shopping but there is still a lot of traffic. I love the zoo. Aquarium is nice, but a little pricey for how small it is. If you have reciprocal zoo memberships you can get half price tickets to both zoo and aquarium. Aquarium wouldn't take any longer than a morning or afternoon although with kids that don't like to play you can get out in an hour and a half. Sculpture gardens outside Nelson Atkins is centrally located and has enough space for them to run around without worrying. Crown Center usually has an attraction for the kids and that is where the aquarium is. Check out Union Station to see what their exhibits are and they have science city there.

There are some great suggestions here!
If you do go to Crowne Center, check out Fritz's Railroad Restaurant. They deliver your food on a train and when I went as a kid, I loved it!
I'm taking my daughter to KC in September and can't wait. Have fun!
ETA: Rainforest Cafe is a fun option too!

LEGOLAND/Aquarium (they are right be each other) is fun (although pricey.) My girls loved the Dinosaur restaurant (the food was awful but the décor was cool ha)
Also not sure if your kids are into this kind of thing, we walked around the Cabelas because they had animal displays which my girls found awesome (could freak out some kids who aren't used to this kind of thing though.) It's free entertainment .

bumping! starting to plan things to do and seeing if anyone else has been/lives around the area.

@LuLu Mom: Yes, my DS especially loves Cabela's and I think it is a like a free mini-attraction for kids too! Haha. DS will also go crazy at Legoland because Legos are his big thing right now.
@mrskansas: That sounds super fun!! I will look into it. We have planned dinners most nights, but I wouldn't be surprised if the coordinators planned a dinner there.
@kes18: Deanna Rose sounds perfect--I'll have a vehicle so I don't mind a bit of a drive!

@MrsSRS: We looked at a baseball schedule and looks like they are playing out of town the whole time we'll be there--go figure!

@matador84: Bummer. If you like Cabela's try Bass Pro (fish and boats to climb on) or Scheels (has a ferris wheel).

These were all great recs! Kansas City, Missouri was a GREAT place to spend a week with kids. We didn't make it to everything because I needed more rest time than I thought (almost 7 months pregnant at time of visiting), but it was a super fun 5 days.
We did:
Legoland-expensive for tickets, but for us well worth it. I bought the highest level tickets anticipating we would also go to the aquarium but we never even made it so it was kind of a bust. The kids LOVED legoland. It was clean, not too crowded because they limit how many people are in at a time. We were there for about 3 hours.
Zoo-The zoo was amazing! The only thing I would have done differently is go to the farthest part of the zoo first and work my way back towards the entrance. Then, I would have avoided pulling 70 pounds of kids in a wagon uphill for practically a mile at 2pm in the heat! Other than that, my kids loved seeing the huge amount of different animals they have.
IKEA-Fun, just the usual IKEA. It was my kids first time to go to Smalland (their childcare) and they were seriously obsessed. We ate a quick lunch after shopping and it was a nice casual play day.
Country Club Plaza: We were here everyday to walk around, look at the different fountains and shop. My kids loved it and it was a really nice atmosphere especially since it was close to our hotel.
We didn't have time to do Kaleidoscope but I did see it as it was across the street from Legoland and looked like a ton of fun for my kids and it was free also. We definitely would have done a Royals game but they were out of town while we were there! Science City also looked super fun, but I just couldn't pack it all in.
It was a great time!
