My very first Kindle finally broke, it was a very sad day. 
I'm going to ask for a new one for my birthday. Should I get the Paperwhite or the new $79 Kindle? What's the difference? The paperwhite says it has a light, is the light attached or is it backlit?
What Kindle do you have and why do you like it?

I asked for the $79 and my DH got me the paperwhite. I love it. It is backlit but you can still see it in the sun and everything. I don't know any other differences because I didn't research it

I have the paperwhite and love it, because I can read in bed at night when DH goes to sleep and I don't disturb him. I thought the backlit feature might be a strain on my eyes, similar to a phone or tablet, but it's completely different. I loved my old kindle too, but I love the paperwhite more.

The paperwhite is magic. We have one of each and always fight over who gets to use the paperwhite. It's so nice to be able to read in bed without a light.

I really really love the paperwhite! I have had 3 versions of the kindle, and this one totally blows the older $79 one out of the water! It is backlit and it is amazing.

Paperwhite is what I plan on getting next. I think the backlit option is worth it because I kept toting a book light around with my old one and that got old.

I have been hoping mine breaks so I have an excuse to get a paperwhite, it would be so nice to have light without having to use my heavy cover. Unfortunately for me, Kindles seem to have a nice, long life

I asked for (and received) the paperwhite last Christmas because I was always trying to read while nursing or while LO was asleep.
I felt kind of silly upgrading when my older kindle still worked fine, but it was definitely worth it.
The paperwhite is backlit, but not in the way that a computer or phone is - it's much easier on your eyes.

My original broke last year and I replaced it with the Paperwhite which I LOVE. There is no fiddly light to bother with, it is all backlit and you easily control how bright to make it depending on the setting you're in. My only (very minor) complaint is that the touch screen is super sensitive so I constantly find myself flipping pages when I didn't mean to, but that's probably just me being me. I love it though and think it is well worth the money.

I would go with the paperwhite to read in the dark. Still going strong with my Kindle touch, but paperwhite seems to be closest to the touch just with the backlight.

@mediagirl: usually when you login to your Amex account there is a tab that says "special offers" - check to see if you have that staples deal!

Get the Paperwhite. I have one and love it!!
Technically, it's not backlit. The lights are at the bottom and it uses some special material to "spread" the light across the screen. This kind of light doesn't hurt your eyes over long periods like a backlight would.
