My parents - they work full time with computers, go home to work on their farm (they have work from home days too), raise chickens, are starting up their vineyard, and don't need extras. Think extra mugs, extra papers, extra anything. Creature comforts sure but not another 'gadget' that sits on their desk taking up space and looking decorative like that magnetic globe I bought my dad one year. Suggestions besides a Lowes giftcard? (Which I know they would use...)
PS: They love their chickens. And are super excited about their vines growing.

For me- trying to fill out a secret santa gift for my sister. She's very picky and likes higher end stuff- but is also very good at including a wish list, with links, thankfully! I got her a nice travel bag/cosmetics case thing that she asked for, but could spend about $20 more to get to the Secret Santa limit. I'm thinking some nice travel size toiletries, but now I'm stumped on what exactly. What's a nice, sort of fancy, product that would be nice to have (along the lines of L'Occitane hand lotion or whatever?) Or say, nice toothbrush covers or something?

I feel like I need 1-2 more small thing for my husband. We usually spend about $200 on each other and I'm only at like $150. So far I've gotten him a fitbit flex, a fruit-infusing water bottle thing (from shark tank, he thought it was super cool), beard balm (again, weird but he mentioned wanting to try something like that out), and this little mini phone charger that fits your key chain. He *likes* fitness but doesn't really have time for anything because he works full time and goes to school at night. He also really likes music but he already has every album ever made. He's also a huge sports fan but his family got him lots of sports gear. And he hates clutter so knick-knacks are out. Thoughts?

@Mrs. Grizzly Bear: I'm probably stuck in hand lotion brain, but do their hands get really dirty, then really dry, from washing? I know gardeners use the nail scrubby things then heavy lotion?

@Mae: What about really nice socks? God, I'm really lame at this! But either nice athletic, technical socks, or just nice trouser socks?

@Mrs. Grizzly Bear: When I can't think of what to get my parents I get them experience stuff. Either one on one tickets to go with them to a play or concert or something, or something for them to do together like a splurgy restaurant they wouldn't usually go to.
@Foodnerd81: If you're near the mall I'd go look at the checkout line at sephora. They always have lots of stuff in there that is usually $5-20.

@Foodnerd81: They don't garden? But I get what you mean. My mom has a specific brand of lotion she uses, my dad doesn't lotion at all, and they aren't really needing to wash their hands all that often over any other day job. I guess that's why I'm leaning towards something to do with growing grape vines, tending chickens, or something they can consume/use.
But great thought, thanks! If all else fails maybe I'll get them some nice foot lotion or something since I'm sure their feet must be tired from work + farm.

@Mae: Oooo that's a good thought. Thanks! I'll have to see what I can find. My dad might be trickier than my mum...

@Foodnerd81: I've thought about that, and I might. He really likes funny/cute socks. But since everyone knows that, everyone gets him them! Both or moms are getting him cute socks and I actually just bought him some just because he needed them a few weeks ago, so it seems a bit less exciting.

Oh, I thought of another one. A new brother-in-law I know absolutely nothing about other than it's still their first year of marriage and he doesn't drink. And he's tall. That's the extent of my knowledge.

@yellowbird: We don't have any pro sports teams in our town. In the past I've gotten him stuff like tickets to a comedy show, but we aren't to the point with LO where we can leave for a date night (at least, certainly not reliably) so I feel like that would just breed stress.

@Mrs. Grizzly Bear: I guess I was equating raising chickens (and vines??) with gardening in that you would get dirt under your nails. Umm can you tell I live in the city and was raised in the suburbs, NOT the country??

@Foodnerd81: I'm actually just ordering DH socks on Amazon right now! Lots of his are worn or have holes and he doesn't bother to buy himself new ones. Ordering him some boxers for the same reason.
I went to the local co-op today and picked up some little stocking stuffer type things for various people. Badger cocoa butter lip balm (Fair Trade), goat milk soap made in VT, essential oils, fancy Fair Trade chocolate bars...

@Mrs. Grizzly Bear: Can you just get a gift for the couple, not BIL? We weren't doing big gifts with my sister who just got married (she opted out of secret santa because they will be away) but I got them cute coffee mugs that say Mr. and Mrs.-- but I know them well enough that I know they like cutesy things. My other BIL would be like, can we return this?

@Foodnerd81: No no, I get it, and it is brilliant! Just right now the vines are kinda in hibernation? Stasis? Not growing and they're still in their first year so they don't need a ton of tending yet. The chickens... I'm not so sure, other than my mother is very fond of them but mostly she just feeds them, pets them, cleans the coup, and gets the eggs. That's an every day thing but then they go to their regular typing-computing-saving the world one program at a time jobs....

@IRunForFun: Yeah, I usually get DH boxers and socks for Christmas from TJ Maxx, but he is actually set this year. I got him a leather briefcase that he will likely return.

@Mae: The Sephora checkout line kind of stuff is exactly what I'm thinking of, but I really don't feel like going to the mall... maybe if I got in the morning tomorrow it won't be that bad.

@Foodnerd81: I really like the bumble and bumble hair product samples (sprays) ... It's usually at target.

@mae: Perhaps a subscription to a good sports periodical or even bound copies of things like Grantland Quarterly? For soccer, I get copies of Howler, and there's also Eight by Eight or The Blizzard.
I'm sure that there are equivalents for the sports he likes. It makes a change from sports gear or equipment.

@mrs-grizzly-bear: Would some cookbooks be appropriate, specfically for cuisines that they're not all that familiar with? Madhur Jaffrey, Marcella Hazan, Darina Allen all spring to mind...

@Foodnerd81: Do you have Amazon prime? You could totally order travel toiletries on there!
Or little kits from Sephora!

@IRunForFun: I actually have Prime because this same sister shared hers with me

I bought a "growl tap" for DH and I'm unreasonably excited about it. DH likes to get a growler of craft beer from time to time, but it is hard to justify, because we don't usually finish them in one sitting, which means flat beer. This is a tap with a small CO2 cartridge you attach to the growler to keep your beer from getting flat. So ingenious. It's $45 plus about $8 shipping. I can't wait to see if it works, ha!

@IRunForFun: No, I don't think so. Still my account, I'm just added as a household member. I think. Even if she saw she'd probably assume it was for me.

@Foodnerd81: Gotcha. I had planned to go to a couple stores tomorrow but decided I didn't want to deal with the crowds so I just used Prime. So convenient.

Kinetic sand was vetoed as a gift for a 6 & 7 year old boys. Need something else- joint or separate gifts. I have a Target, Walmart, and Toys R Us close by.

@Mae: beard balm is a great gift, my husband uses my hair wax all the time for his. My guy is into fitness at home stuff- Nayoya Abdominal Mat for comfortable ab exercises; Fuel adjustable step stool. Both are compact perfect for storing and very effective.

Here are some ideas I did for various hard to shop for people:
daycare teachers: I put together a Trader Joe's gift basket (wine, soap, some of my favorite items, chocolates, ect.) It turned out really cute. Basket from IKEA.
Friend exchange: Mr. & Mrs. canvas pillow cases I found on Amazon, they were a big hit (and something I want so bad!)
sisters: we always do homemade gifts, I did Peppermint candy cane sugar scrub in cute bottles, I think they will go over well.
most kids in our life (under 8) I bought them all the IKEA easel, it's huge, it's nice quality, and it's a great price. Then I got chalk, dry erase markers, paper, and paint to go with it.
