Following with interest - I've been interested in doing this (with pom-poms, but same idea)...but have struggled to figure out:

1) Can one jar earn pom-poms/marbles for more than one specific behavior? I'd want to do a "listening" jar, and that seems like it's pretty abstract.

2) Are there pre-assigned values of how many pom-poms / marbles you gain/lose for each circumstance? Are some instances of the behavior "worth" more pom-poms/ marbles than others?

It seems like the whole thing could get pretty arbitrary pretty quickly, and lose meaning to the child. There's got to be a good way

ETA: For earning a reward, I intended to draw a "fill line" that the pom-poms had to reach. That seems to be a more visual concept for a preschooler to understand, rather than trying to count a hidden mound of marbles/pom-poms, which could get tricky once they start overlapping.

If you are starting with rewards you want the reward to be after only a short time at first. so you might want to try maybe getting 5 marbles in a day and then a reward before bedtime. over time you can extend the reward interval. but if you start out too long preschoolers arent likely to be able to stay focused on the goal.

I think this definitely works for some kids i think whether or not to take a marble back depends on your child. with my 4th graders i would take one away, but with my 3 year old i wouldnt. he wouldnt be able to emotionally deal and it would just sour the entire thing. we would probably just focus on the positive.
