I don't have a nanny, but I would think tacking on a set amount each week and acknowledging that it's to help cover the cost of her gas would be sufficient. Some weeks, she'll come out on top and others you will and it'll probably all even out in the wash.

This is awesome! Our nanny never drove, so we didn't do gas....but honestly, it sounds like she's someone you like and trust, so I'd just discuss it with her. Go in with an idea of what you think is fair - maybe base your idea on a quick rough calculation of the # of extra miles you think she drives per week due to activities, the cost of gas per gallon, and the (very rough average) miles per gallon her type of vehicle gets. And then I'd round up to an amount that is easy to pay ($0/5 increment) for goodwill - if you want to add in a bit to allow her to purchase treats/conveniences while they're out, I'd say that's fine, too. We always did treats/snacks/etc. through a petty cash envelope and asked for receipts. It wasn't about lack of trust with the money, just about me wanting to know where they were going/what they were doing without having to grill the nanny.
