We have a nanny/babysitter for my 11 month old 3 days a week. Her birthday is this week. Are we supposed to do something? If so, what is expected? My husband suggested a nice card and maybe a Starbucks gift card or something like that... or is that too cheap? Is it expected to do anything at all??

I don't think it's expected, but it's nice. I also think that if she's good that it's important to make sure she feels valued and that's one way to do it.
We gave our nanny a Visa gift card for $100 and a card the first year she was with us. She is with our son 2 days a week so similar to your situation.

@Lbee thanks. That gives me something to think about. I want to do a little something, but not sure if maybe I should do a higher value?? Hard to say. I know she is a coffee drinker, so I thought maybe Sbux. I guess cash is always good but I feel a little weird giving her cash for her bday.

As a former nanny I think anything would be appreciated. My last family gave me cards (one from my bosses and one from LO) a gift card and some flowers. It was so sweet and thoughtful and totally unexpected.

My NF takes me out to dinner with my boyfriend and a few close friends, bakes me a cake, and gives me gifts. I think a gift card and a thoughtful card would be really nice. It is so nice to feel valued and appreciated.

If you can how about letting her go home early that day, but paying her through the day. I would tell her this in advance in case she wants to plan to do something fun.

When I nannied, the family I worked for always have me a nice card with a gift card. One year it was $100 to the mall, another year it was $100 to lululemon.

Truly anything will be appreciated, I loved when baby families did something for my birthday, it was kind of crappy when they forgot... Another thing you could do is suggest they plan something extra fun for the day? Art museum or something if she's the type who looks to get out.

@MrsADS: we have done different things over the years- small gc and a nice candle, pretty bouquet of flowers we picked up and cupcakes, etc. I think anything is nice and would be appreciated!

We do a gift card. Last year she was relatively new to us, so I did $50.

As a nanny I was spoiled by my families on my birthday, and it felt so lovely to be thought of. Although the gifts were incredibly generous, it wasn't about what they were-it was about the fact that they cared enough to do something that was so touching. We try and spoil our part-time nanny on her birthday and over the holidays. She is a college student, and she seems to really appreciate getting nice gifts and cards since she's paying for her school and activities, and can't get things like that for herself. She takes care of my most precious gift, so I want her to feel valued!
