I think warm ivorys or light greys can look nice if you want to keep to a neutral palatte in your home. I've also seen some pretty periwinkles and aquas used for both sexes. You can get the basic supplies (bedding, etc) with just patterns like circles and stripes, in again neutrals like browns or generally multicolored. Then you can add pops of color via artwork or other accessories that are tailored to your little one after they arrive.

Honestly, I think some shades of blue are very neutral! We're using an aqua blue in our girl nursery and her carseat and stroller are aqua and gray.

The browns currently in the room can be used, especially if you end up using an animal or zoo theme.
Grays and purples (lilac) would be a great neutral combo.
An ocean theme is neutral, and you can do this with the right shades of blue.
You could even do the whole room in shades of white.

I actually am loving a cool gray. It could be paired with lilac or a light green. Here's an inspiration picture of a nursery that I love.

We have a dusty blue/periwinkle guest room and I'm not planning on changing it when it becomes a nursery. I'm planning on using bright primary colors as accents. I figure if we have a boy I can paint green stripes & if we have a girl I can paint gold polka dots on the existing wall color.
If I do repaint I'll be going with the grey/yellow combo or beige & ivory.

Our office will become the nursery - it's currently painted a camel color - I think it might be Benjamin Moore Toasted Almond but not sure. We're not going to repaint the room. If it's a boy, we'll accent with blues and browns or teal and browns. If it's a girl, thinking teals and pinks.

PS - I LOVE the gray/yellow combos!

We painted the extra room a kind of sage green (it is one of the historical paint colors one can find) and the trim is a mellow yellow. My DH actually picked the colors just because he liked them. Point to this being that we are going to keep it the color combo is it because it looks so nice!

We wanted to start working on the nursery before we found out the sex, and so we went with a Winnie the Pooh theme. We figured it would work great for either a boy or a girl. We didn't paint, but we have various Pooh wall hangings with blue and green.

I love Aqua as a neutral paint color for a baby's room, you can girl it up by adding Red or Pink accents and boy it up by adding Greens and other Blues.
