Our ped thinks my newborn-5 week old- has eczema and prescribed a steroid cream (fluocinolone acetonide). It has refined peanut oil listed as an inactive ingredient. Has anyone used this before? Any other recommendations to control it?

How bad is the eczema? We saw the derm at 6 months and although it wasn't terrible she didn't want to put meds on it.

@spaniellove: it's not horrible, but it's definitely bothering him- he keeps scratching his face on our shirts.

I have used that medication (topical oil, not the cream) on both of my kids, but they were older (3+ months) with really bad eczema. They are also both allergic to peanuts, and the oil worked to improve their skin. It was perscribed by their pediatrician. After seeing a dermatologist, she recommended using the oil for the scalp and not skin (I forget the reason behind it though). If your LO has bad eczema, I would recommend seeing a dermatologist.

@ustechie: The derm recommended infrequent baths, washing with Dove Sensitive Skin (although I think there are other soothing cleansers people recommend too), and Aquaphor, although we've moved on to Cerave or Exederm. About the peanut oil, I have a peanut allergy and know the refined peanut oil is supposed to have the protein removed so in most allergic individuals it won't trigger a reaction. But there are gentler remedies you can try first.

E had it so bad, we used an RX steroid on her at 6 weeks. I don't remember what it was called, but it was a white cream. She was covered in it. Afterwards, I kept her cooler (heat triggered it), used aquaphor, and mild soaps. And Cetaphil lotion

@blackbird: Just curious, did it eventually resolve? J still has it and it's flaring up worse on his face where solids are touching his skin.

@spaniellove: yeah the cream took it away! She has one flare up on the back of her leg but it's mostly gone away

@spaniellove: our eczema is gone now. Cleared up around 9 months. Now that the heats on he has two tiny patches.

My doctor wouldn't do steroid cream for eczema until he was 6 months old. We treated it with mustela cleanser and cerave or Aveeno evzema cream. We bathed infrequently and didn't dry him all the way, making sure to leave some moisture on him before creaming him up.

My LO is 4.5 months and she's been on prescription steroids for her eczema since she was 2 months. Her skin is very bad. But especially her scalp. What you've been prescribed is one of her prescriptions as well but it's just for the scalp. I need to try it but I just worry bc she has a tendency to scratch her head and put her fingers in her mouth.
Cerave can actually feel painful for people with eczema; my older daughter would cry when I put it on her so we no longer use it. For DD2 we have been using this Alba un-petroleum jelly and I like it pretty well.
