So we got a letter from State IRS that part of our refund was denied because DS's social security number is invalid. It was definitely right, and we sent them a copy of the card as proof... And got the same exact letter in response. Thought it was just us, but yesterday I heard the same thing happened to a friend of a friend, and came across an article about it happening to a bunch of people. Is this common?

Hmm, that's so strange. Sorry this is happening to you. We did not have any problems with our refund this year.

Weird. This is the first year I didn't have a problem with the state. The state is always trying to avoid paying out refunds.

I thought we didn't but we just got TWO copies of the same letter in the mail today (dated June 10 and June 12) saying we're not entitled to our measly refund even though their math still says we are. What the heck?! I'm off to check the bank account. Maybe they gave us three refunds and are taking two back and DH didn't notice.

No, thankfully this did not happen to us. WE have owed money every year until finally becoming home owners and having a baby. What we get back still is not nearly enough but we'll take it..

@swedishfish: I got one of those letters the other day too. Sent it to our accountant and he said not to worry, he had already heard of 15 other people who got those letters. Apparently NYS had a glitch in its system that caused these incorrect letters to be sent out. Hopefully that's what yours was too.

Eh somehow California believes that I am my sister. So I file my taxes and they have her name associated with the SSN. It's interesting every year. I have to go to the Social Security office to get it all straighted out.

That sounds frustrating! I hope NY resolves these issues.
We didn't have a problem with our state refund this year, in fact it was deposited eerily fast after we filed. -
