I live in NYC and don't own a car. I was wondering if people could share how they got to the hospital when their baby was arriving as well as how they got back home?
Zipcar? Took a cab with a carseat?!

We plan to take a cab to the hospital when in labor and my husband plans to bring us home in our car. We do have alternate plans in mind (even venturing on the subway if absolutely needed) as I am due January 22nd and we are nervous about the weather. We live in mid-town and will be traveling to Union Square area for the hospital. The hospital (Beth Israel) doesn't have a lot of parking so the last thing we wanted to worry about was driving to the hospital when in labor. Something to keep in mind is how easy it will be for you to get a cab/car service (if you go that route) from where you live.

Thx, Eupenmalmody! I haven't even thought about the subway option, but good to consider that esp. since our LO is due in the winter too!

we took cabs for going to the hospital in labor and to go home with both babies. with my first, I went to the hospital via car service because no cabs were in sight.

@nycalimama, so for the trips home you just brought and installed the carseat in the the cab?

yes, we used the graco snugride without the base in the cabs. using a base isn't mandatory for installation, it's just for convenience if you own a car to snap the carseat in and out. But we don't own a car, so really have never used the base.

@Clementine: no problem! I have to say though, since having kids I really have cut down on the cabs in the city because you never know what kind of driver you are going to get! for the 1st trips home, we never lived too far or in traffic-laden areas though so we felt a cab ride home would be okay. I know some NYC first-time moms are really turned off by using a cab for the first ride, so they opt for car service with a driver they are familiar with or something like KidCarNY. just a few other options for you to consider of you're worried about taking a cab...

I have a friend in NY that happened to go into labor while at the OB so she was able to walk to the hospital. It wasn't that short of a walk... but all that walking helped get the baby out super fast!
