Oh honey...I just want to smack your MIL for you.

Will DH be firm with her and reply that he is a normal child? If she keeps going, I would possibly text that it would be wise to end the conversation before she says something she might regret later.

I know that's so hard, and much easier said than done. I've been going to therapy for my relationship with my mom, and my therapist has given me so many amazing tools to combat the rude comments she makes. When we go to lunch in a few weeks, we can talk more about it!

That’s really awful but I would just say - consider the source. We already know she’s clearly off her rocker or just a plain asshole. Continue to try and distance yourself.

FWIW we had a cocktail party for the parents of our school in our home. My son (3yo) is known to wear the purple princess dress every day. He loves it. He’s in a class of mostly girls and they all dress up so he decided to join them and now it’s his thing. Not that the reason matters, I guess.
Well at the cocktail party a few weeks back one of the dads said to my husband “that’s not normal. Something is wrong. I’m a doctor, and if that was my kid I’d be seeking help and telling the teachers not to let him do that”.
My husband was SHOCKED. He’s usually not at a loss for words but he was this time. I think he just said “well I think that’s a little harsh” but he had literally just met this guy like an hour before. So he just didn’t know what to say. Of course in hind sight he’s thought of perfect comebacks. Haha. But anyway, people are assholes sometimes and your husband shouldn’t feel bad that he didn’t say the best thing in the moment. He can always go back and say it now, too! This guy is a parent in another classroom who we’ll have very limited contact with, so it’s not worth it for us to go and say something. But if it was a family member we spoke to or saw a lot I think we would.
And what he thinks being a doctor has to do with anything is beyond me. And, he’s 3. I think it’s a little early to be making assessments no matter what your “qualifications”. And who cares, why is that “wrong” or a “problem”? Just so bad in so many levels.
It still makes me mad but then...I consider the source. He said my son isn’t normal but a normal adult would never say something like that about a 3yo playing dress up with his classmates. So as far as I’m concerned he’s the one with a problem.

I've read a few of your posts and ugh...she sounds like a monster. I read this and just can't imagine how toxic she must be to all aspects of your life (when I say your life I mean you, your kids, and your husband and likely the relationship between you and your husband). I 100% fully agree with you going completely non-contact and not having her around your kids either. I see no upside.

That's awful. Next time you see her you should tell her you pray that one day she will no longer be a judgemental twat monkey.

That's horrible. I'm so sorry you have to deal with such an unpleasant human being I don't have any advice because I find it impossible to deal with messed up comments.

My mother in law makes stupid comments sometimes and I have no idea if she realizes she is being rude because she's not actually a mean person... She walked in to watch my son for a dr visit (kids not allowed at this office) and immediately said to me "Wow, you look HUGE!" No hello, just huge. (eta, I'm like 8 months pregnant.) Dh was leaving for work and heard her and immediately shot back "wow that was rude!" lol.

@bubblegum: my son has special needs and I cringe sometimes just thinking about what people say when I leave the room. If they said it to my face or through text though.. I applaud you for not calling her and starting ww ii!! Hugs to you and let me know if you need to meet up for a drink!

@2littlepumpkins: My mil was here last week and she said “you look like yourself but bigger. Like if someone saw you they might just think you are a bigger girl, not that you’re pregnant.” I just said thanks and walked out and laughed. I think she thinks it was a compliment but I’d really prefer someone know I’m pregnant than just think I gained weight!
But what’s funny is that I am obviously pregnant, I’m normally a thin girl and now have a big belly. So I’m just not sure why she said it at all. It’s not even true.
