We spend a lot of time outside in backyard and in driveway etc. with big bro. R will be 6-9 months over the summer and I'm wondering if I should get something for him to play in outside. That I can leave on the porch or garage? Like an exersaucer? Or is this dumb? Can just let him play on a blanket?

I did a blanket with toys on it. We spent a LOT of time outside last summer when DD was that age and I'd just set her up with some toys and she'd play for quite a while.

We have a go pod http://www.kidco.com/products-page/go-pods/p7002/ and both of my LO's liked it when they couldn't walk. Also a good way to contain crawlers outside.

We've been dragging her exersaucer outside on the deck when it's nice. She seems happy to be out and able to watch everything her big brother is doing.

I have struggled with the same question. A swing is great if you have a place for it. We sadly don't so I put together a basket of stuff like bubbles, some "sand toys" that she mostly just eats but we do water play with, a deep tray for water play and we flip it over for a drum. I keep a blanket ready for the yard too so it's easier to go out for five minutes at a time. We also have a hand me down walker that I will bring outside (gated yard) and let her use that on the pavement while wearing robeez.

We'll prob drag her jumperoo out, and prob use the pack & play since she doesn't sleep in it anyway!

We bought a swing that we could hang from the back porch a tree or a swing stand. We also have a sling chair that we would take outside. It has toys that hang from it

DS is 8 months and just starting to pull up all the time, so we have taken to dragging his PNP everywhere with us (we just took it to church yesterday because we don't have a cry room!) When we roam we take just the PNP, but if we are going to be napping somewhere or if we're at home, I also put the PNP mattress in there (Dream on Me play yard mattress), since it gives more cushion when he falls down in it. It corrals him in and he can jump around and we can throw him some toys. We also bought the Mommy's Helper inflatable bathtub (because he outgrew his whale tub) and that also works as a perfect little splash pool in the backyard. We have a jumparoo, but I feel like dragging it out there would be a pain.

We have mostly used the baby swing that's hanging outside but have often considered a portable play yard for this purpose.

I'm having the same issue - I want to play in the yard with my 3 year old, but my 1 year old is into everything and is going to get herself into trouble in the yard - even though it is fully enclosed it is multiple levels (steps up from stone patio to elevated grass) and not super baby friendly. I just got an old exersaucer from a neighbor so I can corral DD2 when necessary. I'm also getting toys that will help engage her (ie a wAter table and a beach tent) and will hopefully distract her from eating rocks
I plan to add outdoor high chairs (IKEA) to our patio dining set so that might be another option to keep her safely contained.
