My mom always buys ahead for my kids. But she fully expects that I'll store the clothes until they'll fit. It's weird to me that your mom is putting them on her now. I would probably ask her to just use the extra clothes in her current size of she gets dirty.

I would wash them and return them to Grandma's when you drop off LO "so that she has them at your (Grandma's) place once she grows into them". You can add that you're worried DD will spoil them before they even fit properly, so she might as well wear the smaller clothes you sent for now.

My husband's family always buys way up bevause they assume web already bought what the girls need in their current size. For LOs 1 year birthday they all gave 3t clothes, and shes petite so she was still wearing 6-12 months size.

But it was super nice to have a full 3t summer wardrobe this year when LO was 3! So I would just thank her and twll her you will store until LO is that size.

I would just say something to her. I dislike it when relatives waste money on things that my LO is never going to wear. My dad also had this idea that it was better to buy "one size up" but he did weird stuff like give her snow bunting in size 9 months when she was 3 months old (i.e. the bunting could fit her in the middle of the summer). I've had to ask him to return things several times, and a few times, he couldn't, so I told him outright that we'd have to donate them. This year, he wanted to buy more clothes for LO's birthday but I told him that we still have things from him from last year's birthday that she hasn't worn yet and I think he got the idea. It has taken awhile, but he's finally starting to get it.

My mom tends to buy DD all clothes that are one size too big because DD is really tall and has tended to grow really fast. This year she hasn't grown as much, so I had to really counsel her NOT to buy an extra size bigger because DD is super skinny and the clothes hang off of her. She didn't listen the first time of course and bought DD size 5T instead of 4t- when my mom saw how silly DD looked with her shorts sagging so much (even with a little tuck taken in the side), she realized that buying way big isn't a good strategy anymore. So that problem is solved. My MIL buys whatever size she feels like DD should be, removes the tags, and washes the clothes before she gives them so DD can wear them right away- I end up donating or passing down 90% of what she gives because it doesn't fit properly or she doesn't get things that are my style- lots of characters/ sparkles/ loud flowery prints when I prefer more classic clothing for little girls. DH has tried to tell her sizes and styles but she just wants to get what she wants to get. Whatever- some child can benefit from the brand new clothes I donate.

Just tell her the clothes are too big. You could pick up the washed 2T clothing from her house in the morning when you drop her off.
