I've read so many good things about packing cubes but I guess I don't understand why they are better than just packing a suitcase without them. Don't they end up taking up more space? Anyone use these? What do you think?

So I had to look those up. I had no idea what they were. They look interesting! Maybe if you're a type A packer, they would come in handy to organize. I could see keeping undies in one, shirts/pants in another and toiletries to keep everything separate.

LOVE THEM.
They make finding things in a big suitcase so much easier. Everything is grouped (I group by item type -- undies in one, shirts in another, etc.) Some people group by outfits. When DH and I travel, we typically share a suitcase and we each have our own bags so it makes co-mingling in 1 suitcase bearable. When we went backpacking, we used these to make hunting through a backpack much easier.
I wish they were cheaper because I would like to get a million sets. The mesh ones are very thin and don't take up much extra space in my bag. I would say the biggest "space waster" is that the items are not perfectly smashed into corners (I used to put socks in the random corners of my suitcase, but I don't do that anymore with the packing cubes. I also don't tend to find random clean socks at the end of my trip that I didn't use when I unpack an entire bag!)

I love them too! I don't pack everything in them though
One for underwear, bras, and socks
One for each kid

@abbydabbydoodlebug: i'd never heard of them either until i was perusing travel tip forums and so many people mentioned how great they are!
@sunny: @Mamaof2: i actually do have problems with keeping track of my underwear and socks and smaller items because my husband tends to rumple through everything in the suitcase when he is trying to find something...and i have 2 trips coming up where we will share a big suitcase with my daughter, so that might be nice to have some organization...thanks ladies!

@SleepyMonkey: ebags is a great source and so is Daiso (if you have a store nearby). There are always tons of coupons for ebags as well.

Yes I love these!!! I use the Eagle Pack Specter Cubes and whatever the bags (vs cubes) are called. They made it so much easier to just roll things up and keep things squashed. With the Specter Cubes they didn't have to stay perfectly square. We used them for a trip to Peru and were able to pack for a whole week in just a smallish duffel bag! We were totally laughing at the other tourists with their tons of luggage.

i don't have any, but I was totally thinking about them today :).
I was thinking of them cause when I travel with the kids, it would be really helpful to corral all their little mini clothes so they don't instantly get messy in the large suitcase! I was thinking of just packing their ikea drawer inserts... haha...

I love them. I have some compression cubes from Eagle Creek-- the medium one holds clean diaper stuff when we're out, and the large one holds a wrap, the girls' sun hats, and changes of clothes for them. I'm planning to get some of the sacks that "match" to use for other diaper bag items, and we'll use them the next time we travel, too. I think they just help find things more easily and keep like with like. I like that they are easy to wash, and really, really like that they can compress slightly to make fabric take up less space (something that comes in handy when you cloth diaper and use wraps).

@spaniellove: Bless you-- that's what I have. Seriously lazy tonight and wasn't even going to look up the proper name. Oops.

I love them, too. Like some of the other posters said, packing cubes make it easier to organize and find your clothes. Also, using packing cubes helps prevent clothes from falling out (and all over the place) if your suitcase/bag accidentally opens.

@tysonja: Yes so cheap there!!! But their sizes are a bit limited.
Btw, for me, I preferred bags on the smaller side. I actually don't even use the large one I got from ebags for clothes because I can't keep the clothes organized in that one! We used it for toys last time we traveled.

These are interesting. I don't think I need them now (pre-baby) but they sound like a great idea when I have kids.

@bluestriped bee: I think they are great for anyone who travels. I certainly made good use of them before baby. And Daiso makes them super affordable to try out at $1.50 each bag.

@Mrs. Twine: They're great in diaper bags! I ended up with a second set of the bag version so I could have little pouches, and this year they came out with colors. Although I also like that you could see what's inside the white ones a little bit. I need to keep emergency supplies packed for ER or unexpected doctor/hospital visits, and these are perfect to grab and throw in my bag.

I thought they were awesome when I backpacked through Europe, but I don't get a whole lot of use out of them now. They help to keep everything organized and keep things from shifting or getting really wrinkled.

I like them for business travel when I try to get by with one bag. I live in fear of accidentally pulling out a bra when I mean to grab my laptop charger.
