I like the idea of the blue in the dining area. As for having too much gray, I'd say that with any neutral color, no one will notice that it is the same all over the house. If you love gray, I say go for it. If it is a light neutral color, I don't think your buyers will give it a second thought (when you move, you mentioned less than 10 years) because they can easily paint over a light color. We have light neutral colored walls everywhere and it has not been an issue with our kids who are now 1 and 3. I wholeheartedly agree with saving the extra paint, also make sure it is clearly labeled (living room, bedroom, etc) so if you need to touch up in the future you can easily find the exact color.

Do you have that dark wood trim upstairs with your light gray paint? If so, I'd love to see a picture. We have that same trim color throughout our home and I'm toying with painting a few rooms a gray color but haven't seen many examples online of the trim with gray and it worries me a bit.

@youboots: Our house is 90 years old and it is definitely a gamble, but we love it so much. Your house is beautiful!! The neutral the previous owners painted most of the main living area is kind of a yellow beige which I've always hated but it doesn't bother me enough to want to change.

I don't think metallic gold will look good with that shade of wood stain so I vote a light red robin eggs blue for the dining room. We have many houses in our city in that same style and same kind of wood detail. The houses are generally very dark because of the dark wood and smaller rooms so I would personally do light colors.

I like light house shadows by valspar. Soft blue with a hint of gray. Also, the trend here is to just go a shade lighter or darker from room to room. So if you really like the gray upstairs go a shade or two lighter or darker on the same color paint card.

Do you like warm tones or cool tones? I feel like gray is very trendy right now and while I also have a ton of it in my home, it's EVERYWHERE and I am beginning to tire of it. I'd do a cool beige rather than ivory, but that's just my preference.

As for the metallic gold, I think it could work, especially if there is a warm cast to the wood...what about a rose gold?

@youboots: it's hard to tell if the wood is warm toned, when we redid our hardwoods, we began with red oak, which already has a warm tone, so we specifically picked a stain without red in it.
