My husband will most likely only take off a couple of days before going back on call. We will try to move his week of paid vacation to around my due date when I'm pregnant but there's no guarantee that's when the baby will actually come.

I moved this thread into the Work board.

My husband can have six weeks off, but he isn't going to take that many. He thinks that if he does it will hurt his career. He is going to take off one week, maybe two. The good thing is that both of our mothers will be around to help me while I am still healing and getting used to being a mother.

My hubby gets all days (vacation, sick, etc ) lumped into one bank. So he just had to save up as many days that he wanted.

He took a week and worked from home for a week.

This is an interesting question. My companies HR policy is rather ambiguous. DH and I work for the same insurance company which seems to lump expectant Moms and Dads in a kinda sorta similar category. If the company offers no "paternity" leave DH os taking 2 weeks post baby and then will likely work from home for a week or two to transition back to the working world.

My husband took about a week of vacation time to stay home with me. He is also going to take another 10 days (after I return to work) so we won't have to start day care until the new year. I don't think it's technically "paternity leave" but it's time off specifically to spend with the baby.

He's planning on taking one week on, one week off for the first month. After that, he'll take two straight weeks when I go back to work.

I think tech/internet companies tend to be more liberal with paternity and maternity leaves, as well as family benefits. When my husband worked for Google he was eligible for something like 2 months paid paternity leave and moms get 6 months paid maternity leave. I think Facebook's policies are similar too, and they even give you $4,000 in something called "baby cash" when you have a baby!

Unfortunately, he now works for an advertising company whose family policies aren't quite as generous...but it's still better than others — they offer 1 week paid paternity leave. With Claire he took that 1 week and and another from his vacation days for a total of 2 weeks. With Aerin, he was planning on taking that 1 week and another 2 weeks from accrued vacation days, but ended up returning to work after just the 1 week paternity leave since things were a lot easier and smoother than we expected.

DH wants too, and is allowed to in Canada, to take any portion of my 50 weeks. But, depending on financing, it doesn't make sense for him to take off time as opposed to me. He may take a few weeks though, we'll see.
