My DH will be travelling to Penang at the end of May/June for business. The office he will be visiting is really close to the airport on the island. Has anyone been to Penang recently? This is the first time my DH has been to Asia, so he's a little nervous! He probably will not have time to sight-see unless the employees over there take him and his co-workers out. We are basically clueless, so any insight would be appreciated!! Thanks

I haven't been, but I've heard great things about Malaysia. I do know that crime rates are very low, much lower than US/Europe, so I don't think there's anything to worry about on that front...

My DH lived there for a year for work. He said it's a perfectly safe island. The area around the airport is mostly Western businesses. If he has time, he should visit the snake temple and eat chili crabs!

@abbydabbydoodlebug: There have been some issues with extremists, but the state has been pretty effective in dealing with them. I think the main problems recently were in Sabah (on Borneo), which is far from Penang and has complicated historical issues of sovereignty that aren't really present on the Malay peninsula. The far more common issue to deal with is stuff like muggings and theft, which are really low (as is violent crime).

@mrsbookworm: I'm not sure my DH would be brave enough to do either of those things! Haha. He cannot tolerate spicy at all, and pit vipers aren't his 'thang, even though that temple is very close to where he'll be! Maybe he'll be forced into going by his co-workers

@hb3233: Yeah, the extremists was the most concerning, but glad to hear the state is handling it well. I don't think pick-pocketing should be a problem since he'll probably be taking shuttles to/from work with his co-workers.
