So, I have a dating ultrasound tomorrow and I am wondering... will they do a normal ultrasound or will they have to go a more invasive route? I am approximately 9-10 weeks if that matters at all.

it's a normal ultrasound. they'll date it by measuring the size of the fetus.

It could go either way. I had a dating ultrasound at 6.5 weeks and they did it abdominally (because it wasn't really important to see good details) and the tech found what she needed to find to get my dating and a heartbeat. Then, I had one at 10 weeks and they did it vaginally - you get to see more detail if it's done vaginally at this point and don't have to hold your pee! My bet is they do it vaginally. Just make sure you show up to the ultrasound w/a full bladder because you'll need one for an abdominal ultrasound.
EDIT - I wrote this thinking if you were wondering if you were going to get a tummy or vaginal ultrasound. Is that what you were asking?

@Mrs. Bee: Thanks I was confused because it said somewhere online that early in pregnancy they do the transvaginal one... sometimes I hate having internet lol.

@cyndistar3: early in the pregnancy they use a wand they stick up your pikachu. i think around 12 weeks they do the ultrasound abdominally.

@winniebee: If they do a vaginal one you don't have to have a full bladder?

They will ask for a full bladder and try to do trans-abdominal first, but if they can't get a good look they will switch to trans-vaginal. In my case, we were able to get a good measurement trans-abdominally at as early as 7 weeks, but I ended up needing to go to trans-vaginal to get the NT measurement at 12 weeks.

Yes, you need a bladder for the abdominal ultrasound.
At my 10 week, she didn't even try with the abdominal for some reason - it sounds more unpleasant than it is, don't worry about it!
For my NT scan at 12 weeks, she did it abdominally with a full bladder.
I just scheduled my anatomy scan for 18 weeks and they told me to make sure I have a full bladder (ugh!)

@winniebee: I knew you need a full bladder for a abdominal one I just wasn't sure if they would want you to have a full bladder for a vaginal. They told me to have a full bladder... But hey at least I am not like 8 months pregnant this time, that SUCKED! haha

Oh duh! I did not need a full bladder for my transvag ultrasound!

@winniebee: YAY! Well I am going to hope they get a clear picture with the abdominal one lol.

I would have def peed all over the place if I had a full bladder during the transvag! Good luck!!

Funny story, my 8 week ultrasound was done abdominally, and they told me to drink 32 oz of water an hour beforehand. Well, for some reason I thought bottled water was 8oz instead of 16oz, so I drank 4 BOTTLES and nearly died while waiting on my appointment. Yes, that's double what I was supposed to drink. 64oz of water in my super full bladder. They made me pee half of it out so they could get an image on the baby! Even so, the little sac still looked all squished

@Killer b: That is hilarious! That would totally be me... I had an ultrasound at almost 8 months and they made me have a full bladder... Part way through it they let me go let a little out because I was in so much pain lol

my first ultrasound at 7 weeks was transvaginal, done right in the OB's office.

My first ultrasound was at 7 weeks, they tried to do it abdominally but it was hard to see anything because I was too gassy I guess? So she did the transvaginal ultrasound. I was really scared of the wand before hand for some reason but it wasnt bad at all.

I’ve had ultrasounds done at 6 weeks (3 separate ultrasounds – long story), 7.5 weeks and 11 weeks and the 6 and 7.5 weeks were trans-vaginal. Its really not that bad or uncomfortable (and I didn’t need a full bladder). The 11 week one (which was the NT scan) was abdominal and I had to have a full bladder, so for me, that one was more uncomfortable.

At my dating ultrasound, the technician did the expected abdominal one and then stuck the wand up my pikachu. It was uncomfortable.
I almost peed my pants.

I had the vaginal ultrasound at 8 weeks. It wasn't that uncomfortable - not nearly as bad as an exam. It was just awkward seeing her shove the wand up there. I made dh stare at the ceiling while she was doing that. I did not need a full bladder....actually....they had just had me pee an hour before so, definitely not. It was all worth it to see that little bud in there.

My sister in law indicated that she had the vaginal ultrasound the first time in order to take measurements. I have had a vaginal ultrasound and holy awkward. Cyndistar good luck...

For my dating US, they started off abdominally, but couldn't see enough so they had to do an internal. Both were fine.
I just had my anatomy scan last week and because I'm chubby in the midsection there is a decent amount of 'me' over my lower tummy, the tech had to push really hard with the abdominal to get clear pictures. That was the most uncomfortable I'd been as of yet. It felt sore/bruised for 2-3 days after.

I had a vaginal one. I must have ovulated really late bc she dated about 10 days behind. It freaked me out a little but they said everything looked fine so not to worry and got a healthy baby in my arms now so dont worry if the dates are off.

Update: All went great, she started with the abdominal ultrasound and we could see baby but she couldn't see my ovaries so we ended up doing the vaginal one as well... (Potentially TMI )It wasn't too bad until she was rummaging around in attempt to find my left ovary. BUT, we did get a much clearer picture of baby and I had so much fun watching him./her wiggle around and wave those cute little arms
