I only have experience training a girl but my newly 2yo son is very interested so there's lots of practicing. He sits (because that's what big sister does, of course) on the big toilet but the few times he's actually peed it's squirting 2 feet in front of him all over the bath tub because, that's where it's pointing 
Do I stand him up? Try to get him to push it down with his hand? Feeling like a first time mom here!

I was totally lost with my 2 year old too!
We actually do a combo. In his little potty or on the seat with a potty seat he learned how to point down. He just pushes it down and holds it there. He didn't like making a mess so we only had a few mishaps.
But we found he also liked to pee standing up outside. And then DH showed him how to lift the seat and he can just barely reach to do it standing up. So he does both but I would say 7/10 times its sitting down.

Our son never wanted to sit down so we let him learn standing up. It worked for us, but most people I know with boys taught them sitting. I'm curious to hear what others have to say, but I think it's fine to do whatever works for you and for him!

My son sits and we've taught him to point down. Our potty does have a little curve to help catch the pee. He had a little pee accident at daycare today because his son was off so it's not perfect.
I just found sitting to work better for now cause it doesn't always come out right away. So he can sit with his potty book for a min to get his pee out.

I also trained a girl first so I was lost! Haha. But we ended up training him sitting down. It seemed to be easier for him to grasp sitting for pee and poop. But yeah get a pee guard like on those cushiony toilet seats or else lots of spray age

We taught him to either lean forward while sitting, or point it down. Standing came after he got the hang of sitting. At first he made more of a mess standing than sitting because his aim was always off!

We encouraged sitting, but he really took to standing better, so we went with that. It is so much more convenient when out. We had a few times where he completely missed the potty with both methods, but he eventually learned to point down.

At first we taught my son to sit and it was mostly fine. But then his daycare taught him to stand on a little step stool and lean forward and put his hands on the toilet tank. It worked perfectly so that he peed into the bowl and didn't have to aim at a young age.

He sits on toilets inside, but loves to pee on trees and such outside!

DS1 sits (and pushes down). Now that he's 4, I keep intending to teach him to stand, but haven't gotten around to it.

A lot of potties have a splash guard thing on the front. You could also have him sit backward on the regular toilet so he faces in. Both my boys started standing to pee after they got the hang of things but my 2 year old still usually sits.

We started out seated with a seat over the toilet that has a pee guard to the front of it. Somehow somewhere down the road, they train boys standing up to pee at school. I don't know how they do it, but they did it. Then it just naturally all figure out on its own

My son sits backwards on his little potty (at home) and on large potties while out. Backwards is awesome because there's a lot more space, so his aim doesn't need to be perfect. He doesn't really have an interest in standing, and I'm not really sure how we will work on that, but I'm guessing we will try sooner than than later. We potty trained when he was almost 2.5.

We've trained DS sitting. He tried standing a couple times but it was just a mess since he can't aim. He likes to pee outside, so he knows how to do it standing up.

We trained DS1 sitting. He's almost 4 and still sitting. We've been trying to teach him now how to stand, but he won't do it!

We taught sitting with pushing down. Sometimes he likes to do it "like a urinal". That's just when the spirit moves him.

We trained our first to potty sitting in the beginning. When he got comfortable with it, my husband taught him how to pee standing up.

Sitting and had him point his penis down - he quickly moved to standing because that's how his daddy pees

My guy is almost 4 and still sits down to pee. Unless he's at a urinal. He figured out on his own that he needs lean forward when he goes so that his penis down.

We definitely taught them to sit first. Eventually, they naturally just started wanting to stand like Dad, but it was way less messy to sit when they were just starting and didn't have as much control.

When we were initially potty training, we taught him to sit and either lean forward or point it down. With him sitting, it helped with him getting used to sitting to go poop. Eventually, a few months after he trained, he wanted to stand like daddy (and they also stand at school), so he naturally went from sitting to standing.

My son is 3 and just started using the potty a few months ago. He usually refuses to stand and will only sit (although hopefully in public restrooms we can work on standing more *gag*) so at first I used toilet paper to push it down, but now he likes to stick his butt into the potty and just pees into the bowl. Just make sure he's far enough down so the pee doesn't come out of the slit between the seat and the bowl haha.

So my son was sitting but often leaked on his pants and didn't like that. However, daycare just started having him stand and he seems to be much more excited about peeing now and hasn't peed on his pants since.

We trained my son to sit and point down. He's 4 and still sits at home, but stands anywhere else. He says it's more "relaxing" to sit at home!
My 19 month old girl is starting to show some interest and can't seem to understand she doesn't need to point down like her brother

One of the day care teachers taught my son to pee standing up and either grabbing the seat or the wall depending on the toilet. That always worked well for him since when they lean forward it automatically makes their penis point down and they don't have to attempt to aim it.

My mum taught both my brothers to pee sitting down first. And when I have done potty training for daycare kids or summer camp preschoolers I sat them on the toilet as well and told them to point their penis down with their fingers.
I did have a 2.5 year old whose first language wasn't English and who we were having a hard time potty training. One day he started peeing and I saw it running out of his shorts so I grabbed him and ran to the washroom and put him on the toilet and was super excited when he kept peeing..:only the pee shot everywhere because we hadn't gotten to the you need to point it down with your hand part yet. It was a small and hilarious victory when it happened.

We trained DS to sit. He learned to stand (urinal and toilet) at school from watching other boys.
