My LO is 19mos & has been interested in using her potty seat or the big toilet, so we've been encouraging that, but I hesitate to say we are full on potty training. She's had several successful pees & poops on either the potty/toilet, and we cheer & clap and give her big hugs and praise. I know parents with older kids who are potty training who are all using potty charts & rewards/treats for their kids' successes. My question is how have you/would you reward a LO who doesn't yet quite get the concept of anticipating future rewards? We'll probably just keep up with the celebration & maybe some raisins, which she really has been enjoying lately, but am I missing something that could help motivate her? Her sticker chart has been a flop because she'd rather pick the stickers off & crumple them up. Lol!

@GoGoSnoGirl: I'm assuming you're not wanting to use candy for rewards? We used mini M&Ms and Tic Tacs for a couple weeks until he got the hang of it. Then when he had the hang of it we bought him a new toy in celebration of "being all done with diapers" and he knew he didn't get candy anymore
If you don't want to use candy, maybe just let her have a sticker to do what she wants with it (as opposed to putting it on a chart), dollar store/cheap toy, or a special activity??

@bees_knees: that's true, we aren't giving her candy (or other sweets) yet. My thought on the raisins are that she does like them, but we haven't previously made them "special", so I'd feel like I'd have to restrict them to reward time & not use them as snacks/dessert anymore.
That is what I'm thinking about the stickers, but wanted a fall back if she gets bored with them.

You don't have to do a sticker chart - just the sticker can be a great reward! That's what my LO gets at daycare (she's 22 months) and at home we do Sixlets chocolate. It's best to be very small so it's a reward but doesn't turn into manipulation or a power struggle.

We did m&m's for DS every time he went (he was almost 2.5), but we coupled it with a chart and small toys every 5 times he went. He really wanted a Mack truck toy (from the movie Cars) as his ending prize, so we bought a pack of matchbook style cars that were characters from the movie. He put a sticker on a chart I made him every time he went, then after 5 times he got a car. He needed the added incentive. He could hold it and go on the potty, but just had no interest, so the cars helped with that!

@gogosnogirl just don't use rewards! Praise and clapping get are totally enough especially if she's using the potty regularly. That's amazing! We just potty trained my 26 month old dd with no rewards. She seems super excited as it is with praise.

@Mrs. Pajamas: true, she does seem happy enough with our praise, but I guess my thoughts on having a reward come from the fact that she isn't very regular about asking/agreeing to sit on the potty, so more as an enticement to try, as that seems a bigger hurdle than her actually going once she's there.
But all in all, yes it IS amazing & we are shocked she's interested, let alone having some successes!

We never did rewards. He wasn't eating sweets and chocolates yet and I don't think he would have really grasped the concept yet. So we just did praise and it worked out fine!

We began slowly potty training around that age and didn't use rewards and it was never an issue!

We did raisins, and changed the rules constantly. We started with giving raisins if he sat on the potty. Then we have them only if he actually peed. After a while we only have them if he really needed an incentive or remembered. Eventually we just stopped.
He never had a problem getting them for both dessert and potty. He loves raisins but we ration them because too many messes up his bowels. So any chance to earn more raisins he was pretty happy with.

How about yogurt covered raisins? DS2 totally thinks they're candy.
