Our goddaughter is turning 1 in September but I want to get a gift that I know the parents will use.
They have lots of toys. I'm guessing diapers, wipes, perhaps books and clothing?
What were somethings you were running out of around the 1 year mark? What size diapers do 1 year olds wear (I will probably size up a little so she can grow into them). What types of clothes should I focus on? Bottoms? Shoes? Hats?

I would try to avoid diapers. Thats an odd 1st bday gift.
Clothing for sure. At that age, something fun like a swim suit, a rain jacket, things like that are fun. Shoes are hard because sizes range a ton.
Books are great because they start being more gentle with books and really love to read. Lift the flap books are always a hit for us.
Other practical ideas include things like a push bike (one with the handle that is easy for the parents to push).

If her first birthday is in September, you could go with cold weather gear for the upcoming winter - warm clothes, a snowsuit, mittens, hat, coat, maybe a baby sleigh for pulling through the snow.
If you're set on getting diapers - you should probably be good getting size 4 or above. DS just turned a year and he's in size 3s.

DD wore size 4 diapers when she was 1. Clothes, books, and hair accessories (cute bows + clips) are good too.

To be super practical, amazon or target gift card. 
I also always like it when my LO receives books.
I may have a weird quirk, but I actually dislike it when she receives clothing. I LOVE to shop for my LO but I don't get to do it as often as I'd like because she receives so many clothes from relatives. Their style is really different from mine too, and it bums me out to dress her in clothes that I don't like, but I also feel guilty about getting rid of perfectly good clothes. First world problem, I realize.

What I really wanted when my older turned one was her convertible car seat! We bought it ourselves but that would have been a nice gift- but I knew exactly which one I wanted so you would have to ask.
Outerwear is practical but still special my sister got dd a raincoat that she loved. Shoes are a little too specific unless they tell you what she needs/ wants. Push toys are nice for that age.

@catlady: I dislike getting clothes too. I know my opinion is colored because my MIL buys LO *all the clothes* (seriously though) that I never really get a chance to buy clothes for her myself; but I feel the same way when people gift clothing.
For practical, what about some sippy cups? Many people transition from bottles (or BF'ing) to sippy cups around 1 year. You get foks/spoons, plates, bowls too. I always appreciate bath toys too because the squirt ones usually get moldy and stuff after a few months so it's nice to change them out.

I second the suggestion of @yoursilverlining: for eating items. I have a couple of sets of plates/bowls/cups and kid silverware that LO (now 21 mos) loves, in addition to a bunch of Ikea stuff. LO received suction bowls as a first birthday gift, as I recall. A little fun for the child, and saves an expense for the parents!

Honestly, I would just ask the parents. A lot of the things on his thread people said they would hate, I'd appreciate getting and vice versa - a ton of things people say they'd liked have no interest in.

@ShootingStar: Agreed. I always have a running list of what we need or want for our daughter. It's not always the most exciting items, but it's stuff we'd appreciate and we're happy to share if someone asks what we really need.

@yoursilverlining: agree that items you start to use around 1 year are a good idea - straw cups, divided plates, forks, spoons are all good suggestions.
Also around that age bath time becomes much more of a playtime. So some fun bath toys maybe.
Books are always welcome in my experience.
Wooden puzzles.
A bigger gift (size wise so you may want to ask) is the Step2 Push Car. They make girls and boys versions and I've never seen a toddler that didn't love it.
Or a walker wagon from Radio Flyer.

A couple unconventional gifts we got for DD's first birthday that have gone well: a subscription to the baby version of Highlights magazine (it's called "Hello"), and an annual membership to our city's Children's Museum. The museum pass has been awesome since we now feel free to go as often as we want, which is wonderful for rainy days. Something like that, like a zoo pass?

Passes to stuff are great gifts! as are classes (pay for a music class etc). my DD is loving this little pop up tent, she loves to play and hide in it. She also loves books... all the books.

I'd love to receive items that I'd like but don't want to spend my own money on. Like the EZPZ mat for eating. Boon straw cup silicone lids (silicone sleeves you can put on almost any cup to turn it into a straw cup). Rain boots and a raincoat. Or, like someone else suggested, nice cold weather gear - snowsuit, fleece jacket, hat, mittens...

With a one-year-old, I would have LOVED to receive a year's membership to something like the zoo or the children's museum. That would get so much use. Diapers would be weird. I gave my friend a membership to the botanical gardens and she and her kids loved it.

I would have appreciated books! DD wore size 4 I think when she was 1. Agree with pp that a gift membership to a zoo, childrens musuem, or swim lessons would be awesome!

If you want to go practical, I agree with other posters about straw cups, sippy cups, utensils, etc. My SIL got my LO a cute plate set with robots, he loves it. Oh and a pass to the zoo or the children's museum would have been awesome too!
Diapers wouldn't work for me because LO uses a particular brand that doesn't give him a rash.

Id just ask them. I know around that age there were things that I realized I really would like to have...a dedicated running stroller, a portable high chair, outdoor stuff like a water table, hiking backpack, baby pool, convertible car seat.
It wasn't stuff that I had registered for or even thought I'd need (except the car seat).
