I was invited to a friends LO's first birthday via facebook event. She seems to be posting tons of gift ideas for her LO and some not so cheap ideas. Almost daily she post a new request. I'm honestly a little put off by this. Is this the "norm"? When having a party do you expect attendees to bring a gift? Maybe I'm weird but I never expect a gift and honestly do not want any guest to feel obligated to buy my child something. Thoughts?

I do expect gifts at my LO's birthday parties but I'm not upset if someone doesn't bring one. I share wish lists or suggestions if someone asks for the info but I would never make it part of the invite.

Yikes. That it is a FB event makes it seem especially impersonal, too. What is she asking for? I can't imagine that a one year old even needs that much, you know? I mean, if the family is struggling and specifically asked for diapers, clothes, etc. I would understand (then again, hosting a party isn't cheap).
I don't expect gifts, but as a guest I don't mind if I'm given a few ideas because I wouldn't want to bring something they already have. I think with our LO, we are going to do "book parties" where gifts are not expected but if someone wants to bring a children's book with a special message written in the inside cover, they can.

I suppose I would be surprised if I threw a birthday party for a child and no one brought gifts but I feel like birthday gifts are more of fun things someone picked out to help celebrate, not a life transition where you try to help people get ready for the next stage in life (like showers usually are). All that to say, the gift ideas showing up a lot on Facebook would bug me. I would simply but what I thought appropriate and ignore her.

For my LO's first birthday this weekend, I requested no gifts, because I know she will be spoiled by her grandparents, and we really just want people to come celebrate.
That being said, I definitely would not 'post' gift suggestions or anything- I would only suggest things if I was asked outright. -
Well I would definitely bring a present to any birthday party, regardless of age, so I would expect guests to bring a present to LO. I wouldn't be upset if someone didn't though, and I would never make special requests. Sounds like your friend is getting a little carried away but I'd still bring a gift in my price range.

I don't expect gifts. If you're invited to the party, it's because it's something I want to share with you. Parties aren't about gifts, they're about friends, family, and celebrating life!

Someone I know registered at toys r us for her 1yo's birthday, I thought that was over the top.

I suggested things to family when they asked what she needed/wanted but I would never post a list on FB!

That's definitely not the norm! I figured that people would want to bring a gift, but I only gave ideas if they asked, and I told them that they weren't necessary.

I don't want guests to feel obligated, but if they did ask for ideas, I would gladly give some. I would feel weird about posting without any requests..I did a facebook event last year for my LO's first birthday, and a friend posted, "what size is she? what is she into?" so I gave a few ideas there. but I wasn't randomly like, "hey guys - new puzzle idea!!" lol.
