My brother and SIL have always been generous with getting my kids gifts and we would like to return the favor. My nephew’s first bday is coming up and I would like to get him something nicer than just a toy or outfit.
They also live in a small apt but will eventually move into a bigger place by the end of the year.
So nothing big unless they want to put it in storage until then.
Any ideas?
(For Christmas, I got them a pbk monogrammed anywhere chair).

Magnatiles are very expensive but great. I haven’t heard of a kid not liking them. However at 1yo he might still need some time to grow into them.
Or to keep in theme with personalization, these stools are great, we got one as a first bday present and it’s been very cute and useful 3 years later.

My parents got my son the Radio Flyer collapsible wagon for his first birthday, and it was an awesome gift. Or the Radio Flyer tricycle with a push handle and a strap that converts as they get bigger - does their building have a bike storage area that it could stay in?

Could you do a membership somewhere? I prefer experience gifts especially as kids get older and you need to get out of the house. Zoo, museum? Or classes? We did music classes and it was so fun at that age. You could do books or a toy that went with the theme.

A common gift for one year olds is a play kitchen - Hape makes a very compact one that doesn’t take up a lot of space. We had a small one in our 9 foot wide rowhouse and it was definitely worth the footprint. The IKEA one is also pretty compact.
My 3 year old loves magnatiles but they are definitely a gift to grow into. At one my daughter LOVED her Tegu blocks, which are wonderful and you can stick to the refrigerator to keep out of the way. A Brio train set would also be a good thing for a one year old to grow into.
I also love the idea of a museum membership somewhere- we get a lot of use out of ours, especially when we lived in a small space. If you can, a place that is part of the ASTC passport program is great for a family that travels.
A mini-session with a local photographer might also be a nice gift.

I agree on a nice, big set of magnatiles, I don't typically buy for the current age, but maybe something that they can grow into. We also have the Tegu blocks, but I prefer the magnatiles because the magnets work on all configurations, as opposed to the magnets in the Tegu blocks that have the poles to consider when building.

@macsunshine I actually looked into memberships or classes too but both the parents work full time and long hours and they rarely have time during the week. They are also moving to a different area by fall and since they aren’t local to me, I’m not sure which areas are close to them.
We have magnatiles too but my son only started playing with it recently and he’s two. Wouldn’t it be too young at one?
@mrs.lemon-lime love the wagon walker idea with books. Little man can’t walk yet so this I’m sure will be helpful.

its very compact, and it will last forever/be a great toy to grow with. my son who is quite short could ride it at about a year, maybe with assistance. he's 18 months now and plays with it daily. he rides it, puts stuff in the container (it has a lid that opens), puts dolls on it and pushes them around. My 5 year old daughter can ride it too!

we just got this for my newphew's 1st birthday. my kids use the regular scooter part now at 2 and 5, so it's a toy that lasts!

We often contribute to our niece's college funds as a gift, especially when they're younger and don't care much about opening a physical gift. Sometimes we'll give a smaller gift to unwrap as well.

I would suggest a train table but might be too big for their apt. That’s what I got my son when he turned one and he still plays with it all the time 3 years later. Agree with the wagon idea or maybe a plasma car?

Train table would be way too big for their apt. It’s already overflowing with stuff. I’m so thankful they’re moving back to their townhome (they had been renting it out) just bc I feel they need the space.

@birdofafeather we have this for our kids and love it. But...my nephew can’t walk yet...in fact he can’t even crawl or pull up at almost 11 months so I feel like this present is not as relevant now? Maybe for Christmas this year he’ll be walking.

@misolee: If you want to gift something that they can't fit into their apartment, but you're sure they'd love in the town home (and they're moving soon), could you just offer to store the item for them until the move?

@birdsofafeather oh what? I didn’t even know you could sit in it. We have the one for older kids so it didn’t come with that seat thing. I just thought you hold onto it but now I see it’s actual seat. This could work!
@pinkelephant so bday and big first bday party is next month. They won’t be moving until October. I would love to store it but we also live a plane ride away. I mean I guess I could do an IOU kind of thing but October is pretty far out.

Someone gave us a Zany Zoo for our son's first birthday. To be honest he was never that into it but other kids have been. It's a higher price point and a really high quality toy.
