I'll be taking DD who will be 17 months, to Mexico in August. I'm planning on doing a lot of re-applying of sunscreen, big hat, rash guard and frequent breaks.

@blackbird: no advice about sunscreen but I'd put her in a long-sleeve rash guard and have her wear a hat. We're also planning to get one of these floats to use at the pool.

Definitely reapplication of sunscreen frequently is key, and if you want to be extra careful, long sleeve/pant bathing suit and big hat for your DD.

I live in AZ, so hot as shit here too! I pretty much force DS to wear a hat. I just keep putting it on and eventually he give up on taking it off. Long sleeve shirt or rash guard. I bought some cheap white long sleeved shirts for him at target and I put on him when we are playing in the back yard.

I'm all about the all natural way, but in the summer I vote higher SPF over natural. Also read the sunscreen bottle and apply early. The one we have says apply 15 mins before sun exposure.

I'd say start practicing with the hat now, even indoors. Hopefully she'll warm up to it.
Bring some A&A type blankets with you everywhere - they're lightweight enough to cover her up with, or just flat out wrap her if the sun is too intense
Long sleeve rash guard for water, but since it'll probably be too hot to cover up out of the water, lots of sunscreen (and blanket covers!)

@blackbird: We aren't going to Mexico but I am worried about taking R to the beach. She won't wear a hat or her sunglasses. We have a pool shade thing that Lawbee11 showed that we got at Target last summer. A pic is on my IG.

@blackbird: beware though that those blankets probably don't offer much SPF protection. I know if FL they say a cotton white tshirts only offers like 10SPf.

There are good mineral (zinc) based sunscreens that go up to 50-60 SPF.

To be extra safe I went with a chemical spray that I could touch her up with and go over her head with (since she wasn't always keeping a hat on).

Maybe look at baby Banz too because your eyes can get sunburned and your lips too!

Ok, so we live here and here's the deal- the natural sunscreens only half work, better than nothing of course but I wouldn't count on them too much. The best thing is to stay in the shade- real shade from a tree is better than those umbrella nylon fabric. Second best is clothes, especially rash guards and a good hat goes a long way (something you can tie so LO can't knock it off). And I would plan to be indoors in the early afternoon, 2-4 o'clock sun is intense! I try not to go out post nap until around 5.

I am assuming it is going to be really hot, like over 100 degrees in the shade during peak hours.....

I brought my son to the Mediterranean in August, we'd be at the beach at 8 am and again at 6 pm. Rest of the time, we were either inside or under a shaded area. It was so hot, he mostly just wore a diaper! Rash guard was used once, I made the mistake of buying a dark one a little too snug.
