How long have you been pumping? 3 days haha
For LO #... 2!
EP-er or WOH? I WOH and just went back to work this week
What pump do you use? Medela PISA... Same as last time
How's pumping going? Supply is better than with DD1! But day 3 and I'm already over it!
What's your goal? Really want to have enough milk for a year! Last time I was completely dried up by 9 mo b/c work schedule always messed up my pumping plus my supply wasn't great

@snowjewelz: I'm so glad you started this! I just started back to work on Wednesday. I forgot how much pumping sucks!
How long have you been pumping? Today is my 3rd full day but I've used a manual pump a few times while on leave, I was able to freeze about 14 oz before I went back to work.
For LO #... 2
EP-er or WOH? WOH
What pump do you use? Ameda Purely Yours (I used the Medela PIS for my first, I'm liking the Ameda better so far...)
How's pumping going? Ok so far. The first couple days I pumped about an ounce less than what DS ate while I was at work so I added an extra pump in first thing in the morning before everyone gets up. I also started taking fenugreek and drinking mothers milk tea to try and up my supply. I was never able to pump enough with my first so we had to supplement.
What's your goal? To not have to buy any formula! We had to supplement early with my first son because I wasn't able to pump enough. I'm hoping to avoid all the mistakes I made with DS1 so that I can EBF for a whole year.

What pump do you use? Medela PISA and Spectra S2
How's pumping going? Going really well! My supply is starting to dip a little bit, but I'm ok with that now that baby is over a year.
What's your goal? Not sure... I am not sure how long I'll pump for, but I would like to breastfeed until my son decides to self wean or until he is 2.5... whatever comes first I guess!
wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts
@KT326: I just went back on Wed too! And yes, second time around, I'm over it before I even started... And I'm in the exact same boat; didn't have a good stash, didn't have great supply, had to supplement and weaned early... I'm hoping to go a full year this time too, as much as I hate pumping! I ordered some supplements but haven't tried them yet, since my supply this time is better!
@sunny: How do you like the Medela vs Spectra? And way to go for going at this for the 2nd time over 12 months!!!

How long have you been pumping? Since December. Before that I pumped a handful of times while on mat leave.
For LO #: One
EP-er or WOH? WOH
What pump do you use? Medela PISA. Occasionally use a manual pump so I can just leave the big one at work. But that is sooooo tedious.
How's pumping going? It's going well, at least in terms of getting milk. I usually pump just enough for the next day. I have a small freezer stash that I can dip into if I'm an ounce or two short. And occasionally I get some extra to add to it. In terms of enjoyment, however....I hate pumping! But I plan to keep going for awhile at least. I appreciate that I have my own office so can just shut the door and do it in there while I work. Pumping right now, actually haha.
What's your goal? A year. If I get that far, I'd like to still nurse in the morning and at night but quit pumping. I'm honestly not sure I'll get that far, but I plan to do it for at least a little longer.
wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts
@MrsSCB: One day at a time! I had to supplement with my first startingat 6 mo and had to go full formula by 9 mo. While I was sad I didn't make it and also sad for my back account, it was sooo freeing lol. I'm 3 days in and already thinking about the end!
coconut / 8430 posts
@snowjewelz: I think they're very comparable and I don't really favor one over the other. I don't find that I can pump more milk out of one than the other. I think the Spectra was a little more gentle when I first started, but I don't notice any difference now. I bought some connector pieces for the Spectra so that I can use all of my Medela parts on both.
Thanks! I was told when I was pregnant that I might not be able to breastfeed at all because I was not going to be able to be reunited with baby until many hours after delivery due to medical complications, so I am so happy that we were able to establish a breastfeeding relationship and I've had sufficient milk. I think that went a long way to accepting my medical complications and being at peace with it all. I used to hate pumping with #1, but now I just find it peaceful to take the pumping breaks.

How long have you been pumping? - 3.5 months, baby is 7 months old.
For LO #3
WOHM - nurse at home
What pump do you use? Medela Freestyle although I also have a PISA
How's pumping going? - I need to pump 3 times a day but just dont have it in me to give up my lunch break anymore. So I'm shooting for 2 longer sessions. I get about 8-10 oz in two sessions. She's taking 16-20 oz so I'm just covering half.
What's your goal? - Not sure yet. I would like to keep going and eventually cut back to just one pump a day. But its hard to deal with cleaning pump parts for just one pumping per day. I already am just keeping them in my fridge at work so I only have to wash every other day.

How long have you been pumping? 10.5 months

EP-er or WOH? WOH. I started out EP-ing for the first 4 months because my LO was a micro preemie and in the NICU.
What pump do you use? Medela Symphony at first and PISA after I went back to work.
How's pumping going? Ok. Its definitely harder the 2nd time around with work plus coming home to a toddler and the baby. There's alot of days I want to quit but LO enjoys nursing and since his adjusted age is so far behind, he still drinks quite a bit of milk.
What's your goal? Hopefully 1 year actual, then maybe 1 year adjusted? I'm trying to take it one day at a time. If I think of pumping for 5 more months it seems overwhelming.

How long have you been pumping? LO is 15.5 months
For LO # 1
EP-er or WOH? I work FT.
What pump do you use? Medela PISA
How's pumping going? It's really starting to feel like a slog. I am only pumping once in the morning on the way to work, and by the end of the week I only get about an ounce.
What's your goal? Originally, I thought I would stop pumping just after LO turned a year. However, BFing until she is initiates weaning is really important to me, and as I leave the house before she wakes up in the morning, I am keeping my morning pump to maintain my supply. I am a teacher, so my current plan is to keep the once-a-day pump until summer break, nurse on demand over the summer, and then reevaluate when it is time to go back in the fall.
pomelo / 5257 posts
@snowjewelz: I don't blame you for thinking about it already, pumping is not fun
persimmon / 1272 posts
How long have you been pumping? Sporadically pump on maternity leave to give the occasional practice bottle and build a little stash. WOH pumping since November (so almost 4 months).
For LO #...1 & 2 (twins)
EP-er or WOH? WOH
What pump do you use? Medela PISA. The first 2 months I rented a hospital grade ameda pump to try and boost my supply - pumping between nursing.
How's pumping going? Alright. I pump 2x at work and once before bed. Most days I pump just right. But I've had some really low days recently and I'm not sure why. I miss eating lunch with my colleagues. I take fenugreek and drink yogi tea and try to drink a lot of water to main my supply since returning to work.
What's your goal? Before they were born my goal was about 6 months or until they cut teeth. Then, they were born and it was REALLY hard. I didn't think I'd last a month. When I did I kept making little goals and I am very proud that we have the relationship we have now and enjoy nursing them when we are together. At this stage, I'd live to make it to a year. That would be awesome. At that point I want to be done pumping but would be ok nursing a bit more before bedtime if that works...
wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts
@meadow: wow, way to go! You have come so far! So many factors affect supply on a daily basis! I am so bad at drinking water! I eat oatmeal to boost supply and I got some supplements to try this time
persimmon / 1272 posts
@snowjewelz: oh I forgot oatmeal. Yes I eat that 2x per day. Game changer was when I realized the real oatmeal could go in the microwave. I had been refusing to add it into my routine when I thought it had to be stove cooked!!! (Cleaning that pot and stove cooking in the AM was not a priority in my life!! Haha

How long have you been pumping? I have been pumping for about three months.
For LO # 2
EP-er or WOH? I work outside of the home.
What pump do you use? I'm using the Medela PISA.
How's pumping going? My supply has dipped recently, so I had to supplement with a little formula last week. I had previously stayed up through the night trying to pump to produce enough milk, but was barely functional the next day (so I didn't want to do that again). Finding space to pump can also be a bit of a pain, and my nipples are sore from cranking up the pump to try to produce more milk. Otherwise, it's going fine.
What's your goal? I plan to stop pumping as soon as LO can drink cow's milk at a year old. However, I want to continue nursing while we're together (as I did with my first LO).

How long have you been pumping? Since birth, so 8 weeks
For LO #... 3 & 4 (twins)
EP-er or WOH? Neither, still on mat leave but I pump at least one feed a day.
What pump do you use? Medela freestyle
How's pumping going? Well so far but I am currently pumping without pressure to make enough.
What's your goal? To be able to continue to feed them one bottle a day so that they take the bottle once I occasionally WOHM again.
pomegranate / 3921 posts
How long have you been pumping? I started the week she was born because a nipple crack made nursing too painful, kept it up for a stash while on maternity leave, and now am nursing + pumping because I WOH. So, 4.5 months.
For LO #2
EP-er or WOH? WOH!
What pump do you use? Medela PISA. Same as with #1! (And actually, I use both of mine. One at work and one at home.)
How's pumping going? It's good, just SUCH a pain in the neck. I have a great stash built up from pumping so much on maternity leave, but I pump 4x/day on week days because I had such anxiety over not making enough with my oldest that I want to get a huge stash before I stop pumping either before work or before bed.
What's your goal? A year. I'll likely go down to one session at work at a year if we make it that far, and then cut it completely at 13 months. That's similar to what I did with my older daughter, and it worked. If I still have a large stash by 9 - 10 months, I may go to one pump at work sooner.

Hello, mammas!
How long have you been pumping? I also started the week DS was born because of nipple damage due to tie/bad latch (all better now!). So basically 5 months now! I started back to work PT at 8 weeks and FT at 12 weeks.
For LO#1
EP-er or WOH? WOH!
What pump do you use? Spectra 2
How's pumping going? I was pumping 3x during the work day (plus 1x before work) until a few weeks ago. Now I'm doing 2 longer sessions (plus 1x before work) and I like that better. I'm worried about my supply sometimes (okay, a lot!) because of my work schedule so I'm trying to stay dedicated and pump the whole 20 mins. Thanks to being able to close the office door, I can work through pumping. My supply seems like it's enough for him and I try to hydrate and eat right to support that. He's been tracking around the 25%-ile for weight all along and maxes out at a 4 oz bottle so I feel pressure to make sure he fattens up. All in all, I'm trying to keep my thoughts positive about pumping so that I can continue with breastfeeding. I really like that way of connecting with him, given my long work hours.
What's your goal? 1 year and then maybe no more pumping but still some evening BF. Not sure how the supply works at that point! Not really sure how it works now, in fact, it just does!

How long have you been pumping? Almost 5 months! That includes the last month of my three-month maternity leave.
For LO #1
EP-er or WOH? WOH
What pump do you use? Insurance supplied Medela PISA. I just acquired a second one from a friend who had bad luck with nursing.
How's pumping going? Pretty great aside from finding it a pain. I'm pumping just enough for what is needed the next day - sometimes an extra ounce (which I use to make the bottles a little bigger). I don't really pump at any consistent times during the work day. I have my own office so its convenient, but I sometimes have to work outside of my office. This last monday, I pumped three times in the car while driving on the freeway. I've also pumped while standing up in an unlocked utility closet and also in the handicapped stall of a fairly public restroom that required a token to access. Anything to feed my baby!
What's your goal? 1 year unless something like painful biting from teeth interfere. (no teeth yet at 6.5 months. phew) It was a painful start and now that my baby and I are in a nice groove, I don't want to stop. I will only be stopping because I want to try to get pregnant again. I needed IVF for this baby and feel I will be headed in that direction again. But I'd like to try on my own first for maybe 6 months after my period comes back. I will be sad though. I'd love to nurse my baby forever!

@mfa_lady: Since you have leave a pump at work, can you tell me which of the equipment you leave at work, and which you take home with you each day? I just got a second pump and I'm having a brain fart on how best to do this.
persimmon / 1272 posts
@agold: I wish I had a second pump. If I did I'd leave the rubes and power cord at work and bring the flanges, connector, valve, and bottles back and forth because I don't have a place to wash & dry at work. I'm curious what the other ladies do
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@agold: @meadow: I am planning on leaving my pump at work when I go back on the 29th. Just bring home the stuff I need to wash. Then will have my pump from LO1 at home in case I need it.
pomegranate / 3921 posts
@agold: Well, technically I take it all home every night because I pump a shared space (that's used for stuff other than pumping) at the office. HOWEVER...I never have to take the pump, plug, or tubes out of my bag. In other words, the only stuff that ever comes out of my bag at home is what needs to be washed. And I know that sounds like not a huge deal, ha! But because I pump at home in the morning and at night, it actually IS huge not to have to unpack and re-pack multiple times. I feel much less rushed and am less likely to forget something.
pomelo / 5257 posts
@agold: way to go pumping while driving! I have yet to try that. It is tough when you're off-site. Most of my off-site things are one-on-one meetings so I can plan them around time to pump. But I did have to work at a big event for six hours one day and I was really worried about where I'd go (it was basically in a giant open tent and there were hundreds of attendees, so not very private anywhere!). I ended up just going to a nearby hotel, and they offered me a single occupancy bathroom to use. Not the most ideal because it was a bathroom...but there was a chair, table and outlet, so it worked! And I really appreciated their help since I wasn't even staying at the hotel. So awesome you have a second pump, I would looooove to have two. Mostly I end up leaving mine at work and I have a manual at home to use in a pinch.
persimmon / 1196 posts
@MrsSCB: I pump in the car on the way to work every morning (have since August). It took a little getting used to, but now I don't even notice once I'm set up. I always drape a swaddle blanket over everything once I get started, and even go through the drive through while pumping when I need a coffee in the morning.
persimmon / 1132 posts
I love hearing about others' pumping adventures because I'm often trouble-shooting how to pump when in certain work situations and locations. I've never pumped while driving though I have as a passenger several times. The hardest was while standing up in a stuffy gym locker room. The most surprisingly accommodating was the executive director's office--complete with private bathroom--at a conference center.
wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts
@ClairHuxtable: Yes to the soreness! My nipples had been fine until last week when I started pumping again! When DD2 latched later on that first day of pumping, it was not comfortable!
@mfa_lady: Wow, you go girl! I didn't have a good supply or a big stash with DD1 either... But it's just so hard for me to find time to pump! Here's to more milk for us! I def have a waaay better stash this time by the time I started work. My supply seems better also so we'll see!
@Amorini: I feel you! With my first, work totally messed up my supply since I'd have to go to meetings and either my whole schedule gets messed up or I ended up missing pumps. So I'm realllllly not looking forward to that this time!
@agold: Ahh yes to pumping in random places! It's annoying b/c I find that I don't get as much, prob b/c you're in a hurry to finish and also I get kinda tense too. Hard to relax when you're pumping in the car/train/random spaces... lol!
@MrsSCB: that's so great the hotels have been so helpful!
wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts
@Amorini: I was offered the CEO's office in our off-site office once... The receptionist said she wasn't in (well, technically she is CEO's wife). THEN HER SON CAME IN I've also been walked in by custodial worker. Speaking of that, I should make a sign and put it on the door!
pomelo / 5257 posts
@lady baltimore: I love that you go through the drive-thru, that's awesome.
@snowjewelz: Omg, I can't believe the son walked in! My boss told me to pump in our board chairman's office once (my office is in a different building). She was like, "It's fine, he's never here." But there was no lock on the door and I was at that building all day. So all three times I was so nervous he would suddenly show up. Although he has kids...I think even great-grandkids at this point, so...he's probably seen it all haha.

How long have you been pumping? about 5 months lo is 6 months. i started before i went back to work

What pump do you use? medela freestyle and its totally changed my pumping experience from lo1.
How's pumping going? for a while i was pumping LOTS of extra milk. But now I am only pumping twice a day at work and making only a little extra. LO is also reverse cycling a bit and I need to start to feed him bigger bottles during the day. Mom has to sleep...
I pump at my desk at work in a shared open plan office under a cover. I also pump sometimes while working in other situations with people around. My field is unique in a lot of ways making me more comfortable. But I also am trying really hard to not make it a big deal. The battery operated pump has really helped the easy of pumping as have bras that i can wear all day that have slits for pump parts.
What's your goal? A year of mostly breast milk in bottles and nursing mornings and evenings as long as it feels right. I wont stress some formula once he starts eating more food. but i also have a huge freezer stash so maybe I wont need it.

How's pumping going? Great! Much better than I expected and could have ever hoped for.
What's your goal? To not have to buy formula.
I built a little stash before going back to work, then started out pumping one side in the morning, and both sides twice during work. I was lucky enough to have a little over-supply and those pumps built up a huge stash in those first two months back to work. Cut out one of the at-work pumps when LO was 5 months, and cut out the morning pump at 7.5 months. I was still getting almost enough for daycare from just one pump during the day and my plan was to supplement from my stash to get to one year. But over the last couple months she has started to eat more solids and is less interested in bottles so what I'm pumping is enough again. She's almost 11 months, and I plan to quit pumping soon and just nurse morning and nights for at least another 6 months if possible. I could quit pumping at work now and have enough frozen to make it to a year, but I'm going on a 4-day work trip in a couple weeks and I'm nervous about killing my supply if I cut out a pump AND am away from baby for 4 days at about the same time, so I'll wait til after then.

@snowjewelz: I think it's quietish.... the person i am talking to on the phone can here it, but I think only people who are around pumps a lot would know what it is. If there are people talking and doing stuff it kind falls into the background.
I think it's suction is not as strong as other options. For me that's not an issue, but it might be for some.

@maddyz: @snowjewelz: I love my freestyle! I use it in my office with my door closed. Our office is pretty quiet (I can hear pretty well other people talking outside my door). The advantage is that I can put the freestyle in my desk drawer while I pump! It helps cut down on the noise for sure.

@agold: I leave a pump at work too. I have a Sarah Wells Pumparoo bag (https://www.amazon.com/Sarah-Wells-Pumparoo-Breast-Staging/dp/B011M7MIRW?th=1) and I bring that home with the pump parts and then the Medela cooler bag with full bottles. I pack up empty bottles and clean parts into the bag when I head to work in the morning.
