@snowjewelz: I never had to supplement with H, but it was HARD trying to make up the extra and I had a better freezer stash with her. I have maybe 50 oz. right now and I've had to dip in twice this week already to make up extra bottles. I'm going to start eating oatmeal and flaxseed pancakes and avocados to see if it helps like it did last time.

@Pumpkin Pie: I know it can be done... It's just... A lot of work! I didn't have the stamina for it. Eating all the things, drinking all the water, and I think power pumping. I actually bought some supplements this time; I haven't started taking them yet...

@Mrs. Toad: Do you know when you can switch to whole milk for the babies? I would love to make it to a point where I could get my baby on whole milk during the day and drop the day time pumping. But I still want to nurse her anytime I am with her. I seriously love love love nursing my baby.

@agold: My doctors said no whole milk before 1 year, but I'm a rebel and am going to start introducing small amounts of whole milk at 11 months. I will mix it with breastmilk at first for just one bottle a day and work my way up to more bottles and higher concentration of milk vs. breastmilk.

Both of my boys started with whole fat yogurt and cheese products at 6 months and handled them great. I wouldn't go against the doctors orders, but we go on a trip to see my family every June the week after their birthdays and there is no way I'm dealing with pumping/transporting breastmilk across the country. I want to make sure they have enough time to transition to the whole milk before we leave so there are no surprises once we get there.

@agold: 1 year! DD1 was on formula then, but we just cold turkey'd it to milk!

@agold: At his 9 month checkup, I asked the doctor if we could switch to whole milk at 11 months. I went back to school full time, and figured that we would run out of the freezer stash. She wanted us to wait until a year, but it wasn't a big deal to switch. I was a full time student, so I was mainly at home. I just needed to bridge a couple of times a week.

Interesting about introducing whole milk not before a year. Pediatricians here in Germany recommend introducing earlier mainly in baby oatmeal etc. I have also introduced drinking WM earlier with DD and it was fine.

  9. snowjewelz

    wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts

@Pumuckl: I don't see why cows milk can't be introduced if they're already eating diary between 6-2 months? I understand if you don't want to go crazy to make sure main nutrition is still coming from breast milk or formula...

How long have you been pumping? Not long. U was pumping round the clock for a month and now do it just for engorgement but then have started up again whole my baby is in the hospital.
    For LO #... 3
    EP-er or WOH? Neither!
What pump do you use? Ameda hospital grade
How's pumping going? Good. I have a really high supply so have been trying to wean off the pump, but now I'm back.
What's your goal? To throw my pump away!!!

  11. Pumuckl

    pomegranate / 3601 posts

@snowjewelz: yes, we gradually introduced WM to drink starting at 10/10.5 months. But then nobody is lactose intolerant or allergic in our families.

@anonysquire: oh no, is your wee guy back in the hospital?

How long have you been pumping? 4mo (minus 5 days)

For LO #...2 (4 months old today!)

    EP-er or WOH? WOH

What pump do you use? Medela PISA at work, my spectra at home for overnight pumping. Used my medela in the living room on maternity leave.

How's pumping going? Good! I had a bit of a rough start last time when I went back to work. This time has been smooth and easy. Started pumping earlier plus I didn't wean #1 until I was 12 weeks pregnant so my supply was great (lots of colostrum) and #2 didn't lose any weight.

What's your goal? Pump to 1 year, then continue nursing on demand at home. Donate milk (1000 oz in freezer right now) to the NICU milk bank as well as other moms since I didn't necessarily follow the milk banks guidelines earlier. Will keep 200oz to myself as a freezer stash (used about 150oz with baby #1). This one has suspected dairy intolerance so I have been dairy free for 2 months. Have an appointment tomorrow.

  17. snowjewelz

    wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts

@kes18: How amazing! And must be hard going diary free for 2 months! I hope he/she outgrow it soon!

  18. kes18

    apricot / 485 posts

@snowjewelz: it is not bad except for the cheese (no good replacement) and not really being able to get what you want when you go out to eat. He wasn't terrible but he wasn't great- just colic in the evenings, lots of gas/acting uncomfortable, and vomiting about 5x a week (not spit up). So I went dairy free and 2-3 weeks later his symptoms went away (except for some gas still). Either that or just coincidence (which is what my husband thinks...ugh). Interested to see what the ped says tomorrow.

  19. snowjewelz

    wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts

@kes18: Wow. That kinda sounds like my DD2... But not so much now (she's 3 mo). Whenever she spits up/is gassy tho I always think it's something I ate!

  20. kes18

    apricot / 485 posts

@snowjewelz: yeah, I think some spit up is normal. My first definitely spit up every day or so but it was a normal amount I guess. And she was a very happy baby, just some usual fussiness. This one would throw up and it would cover me, him, and then whatever we were on! It was a LOT. I guess they have "happy spitters" that spit up but are still happy and that's fine. He was just so fussy and colicky and was obviously uncomfortable, that's mostly why I trialed it!

Daycare is killing me! I've been sending four 4 oz bottles and DS is going through all of them in the 8-9 hours he is there. And this morning they asked me if I could send another one if I know he is going to be there closer to 9 hours. I've already added a pump session after bedtime and one first thing in the morning in order to get 16 oz. I can't pump anymore. I feel like he shouldn't be eating that much.

Anyone deal with this? Should I just give them a bottle of formula as a just in case bottle? Or tell them they need to space feedings more. I've tried to tell them every three hours but when he gets mad their first go to is a bottle.

ETA: with my first son I couldn't even pump 8 oz so we had to supplement right away when he started daycare. I really wanted to avoid it this time.

  22. snowjewelz

    wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts

@KT326: Wow, so they'r feeding him 4 oz bottles less than 3 hours apart? I feel like that's too much too soon also. Do they pace feed? B/c if he just gulps in down super quick, he probably doesn't realize he's full and therefore will cry for more...

  23. avivoca

    watermelon / 14467 posts

@KT326: I'm dealing with the same thing and I've just had to tell them to try to space it out. I can't pump any more than I am and I'm already pumping four times a day to get 16 oz. I'll supplement if I fall below that regularly, but not until then if I can help it because formula is EXPENSIVE.

  24. KT326

    pomegranate / 3438 posts

@snowjewelz: @avivoca: thanks ladies, makes me feel better that they are probably feeding too much. I told his main teacher today that they really need to try and space out his feedings more.

  25. agold

    grapefruit / 4045 posts

@KT326: I'm so sorry you are dealing with this. I feel like I am always reading about day care workers requesting more milk and moms needing to supplement. My baby is watched during the week by either my mom or my husband and I was worried about needing to supplement. But she takes three (3) four-ounce bottles between 9 am and 5 pm. I always leave a 4th bottle just in case, but she's more likely to only drink 2 bottles than to ever need the 4th. And my girl is a porker who never turns down food. I really hope you can get it worked out in a way that is acceptable for your and good for your baby. As is pumping isn't stressful enough, right?!?!

    Jumping in...

How long have you been pumping? Today is my first day back to work, but I've pumped a few times a week at home the past 2 weeks.

    For LO #... 2
    EP-er or WOH? WOH
What pump do you use? Medela PISA

How's pumping going? So far so good. 8-1/2 oz. pumped today, I have 9 oz. at home and probably an extra 9 oz. at daycare. One of the girls at work left so I can use her office to pump which is sooo much better - access to a computer and my own drawer to store everything. Although now I don't have an excuse to not-work, with LO1 I read the whole time.

What's your goal? Pump 12 months, and have a stash built up to get me through next winter, so ideally an extra 1-1/2 month's worth of milk. I'd like to think the breastmilk kept LO1 healthier. I bf 14 with him.

  27. josina

    pomegranate / 3973 posts

@KT326: Do you think it would make a difference if they gave smaller bottles more often?

I'm realizing reading this I probably haven't been putting enough milk in my bags, I gave daycare 3 to 3.5 oz bags of milk, I was thinking DS took 3.5 oz bottles the whole time, but maybe it was 4 oz..
She is 6 weeks old, and eats every 2 to 3 hours... 3.5 oz sound like enough?

  28. snowjewelz

    wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts

@josina: I think she's probably fine! My 15 week old still doesn't drink full 4 oz every feeding! She also still gets up to eat over night so I'm not that concerned. Hope you have a great first day back!!

  29. Smurfette

    GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts

@KT326: wow! That is a lot of milk. My LO takes 3 4oz (sometimes she only drinks 3.5 the first one) in the 10 hours she is at day care. Does he take a paci?
@josina: my LO is 13 weeks and sometimes still only drinks 3.5oz. But I have a friend whose LO is 7 weeks and take 4-5 ozs each time. I think it just depends on the baby.

  30. josina

    pomegranate / 3973 posts

@snowjewelz: @Smurfette: Thanks. She usually just nurses one side during the day, so I think 3-3.5 will be okay for now but I'll check with daycare and see what she thinks.
I'd love to get a stash built up without having to pump a ton. I think I usually got 15 oz. per day with DS, so 3 - 3.5 oz bags must've been what I sent the entire time - and he was always in the 90% range for weight.

Ugh a month into pumping, this week I'm suddenly pumping less. Wondering if I'm too tired (DD2's been waking up more at night), or what...!

Sitting here pumping so I figured I might as well join the "fun"...

How long have you been pumping? For this LO, about two months. Just started back at work last week, so I'm ramping up the pumping.

    For LO #... 2!

    EP-er or WOH? WOH

What pump do you use? Got a Spectra for this round and like it.

How's pumping going? My supply sucks. With my first I easily pumped 15+ ounces a day until she started solids. Now I'm reaaaaally working to squeeze out 10, and I know it'll only go down.

What's your goal? Hoping for a year, but I'm scared I won't make it with my low supply.

  33. snowjewelz

    wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts

@babypugs: I did 9 with 2 pumps today I was getting 12 when I first started! I thought my supply is better this time and it was, but I now I'm nervous!

  34. Smurfette

    GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts

@babypugs: @snowjewelz: I feel so much more pressure to pump enough since she can't have regular formula. It sucks. We are trying 5ozs bottles, so we can try and get her to gain more weight, so that brings me to barely breaking even. I really don't want to have to pump every morning or night at home to get enough. Why can't the boobs just get the message we need more!

  35. agold

    grapefruit / 4045 posts

@snowjewelz: I find that if i get good sleep, drink lots of water and eat big meals, then i pump more. I hope today is just a fluke.

Girls! I think I have a clogged duct! I didn't have it this morning, and I didn't have it during my first pump at 1130 am. I felt it some time around 130 pm. Ouch! I pumped again but its still there. Do you think a new bra could be causing it? I have on a new dairy fairy bra today that I'm wearing for the first time. No underwire. Its super comfortable. But maybe I have it strapped on too tight of a setting. Could that be the problem?

Since I'm pumping now, I thought I'd join in

How long have you been pumping? 14 (long) weeks

    For LO #... 1

EP-er or WOH? EP but trying not to be. My DD was born 8 weeks early, so I started pumping at her birth. I'm working on transitioning her from bottle to breast so hopefully I can stop pumping so often soon.

What pump do you use? Medela Symphony

How's pumping going? Although it's not my favorite, it's going well. I'm lucky to have an oversupply, and I average around 40 oz a day. My DD eats around 21 oz/day so I have quite the freezer stash. I'm planning on donating some milk to a local milk bank, since some of my stash is almost 3 months old and I'm running out of freezer space.

What's your goal? Ditch the pump, but I'm not sure if that's possible at this point in time. I'm currently experimenting with dropping from 6 to 5 pumping sessions a day.

  38. sillymilly

    olive / 60 posts

@agold: ouch! I tend to get clogged ducts if I don't fully empty my breasts during a pumping session, although I have had a lactation consultant mention that some people get them from wearing a bra that is too tight. I usually have to massage really hard to get the duct to unclog, and sometimes it takes a few pumping sessions hope it clears up for you soon!

  39. snowjewelz

    wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts

@agold: I would think no underwire is more u restricted tho? Try to massage and knead it out tonight! I've had those... so painful!
