I think honestly it depends on how close you are to the person. I usually spend in the $25 range for coworkers (lately a TON of my husband's coworkers have been having babies) and around the $40-$50 range for friends/family.

i agree with adira. i think $20 for someone you're not close to (perhaps some baby clothes or toys), $50-100 for a close friend, i spent about $300 for my bro and SIL (but i would only do that for them).... also, what you could do is get a group of people to pool money to get a really nice present..

@Mrs. Bee, great tips! If I have enough prep time, I like doing handmade gifts too. My go-to if I have time to make it is a simple quilt that costs me about $10 in materials and takes a couple hours to complete, but everyone seems to love that its handmade!

If you're tight on money (and who isn't these days), handmade items are the way to go. But if you're also short on time, I would definitely hit up stores like Ross & Marshalls like Bee suggested. They've got cute brand name outfits, blankets, toys. They don't need to know that you didn't pay full price :).

maisymay: yes, buy for at least the 6 month size. the thing is though, that all clothing lines fit differently and you just don't know what size the kid is going to wear at what age and in what season. To give you an idea, my 10 month old DS wears size 18 months in Carters, 12-18 months in BabyGap and 12 months in Ralph Lauren.

I don't buy clothes as gifts. I give something along the lines of Sophie the Giraffe if I want to spend under $25. I've also given a Very Hungry Caterpillar board book and stuffed toy. I always include a gift receipt, so if I wouldn't want to let the recipient know the store or how much I paid, I pass on that gift.

I have always spent around $50-$60 at any baby shower I attended, and closer to or around $100 on people I am close to. However, I just had my baby shower, and I realized I have been being too generous to many people such as my husband's friends wives in particular! It seems like most of them spent about $35-$50 on me. If I could do everyone again I'd spend more like $40 with the exception of those I'm close to.

I like putting together gift baskets or diaper cakes! Now that I've experienced the newborn stage, I really like packing in things that I considered to be essentials. I think $20-30 is fine, especially if you aren't very close with the person, but I usually end up spending more since it is so fun to baby shop

I have the same rule for gifts at any occasion - dont spend more than you are comfortable with.

Personally, I'd much rather get a $20 gift that was on my registry than $75 worth of clothes that aren't my taste. I believe in shopping the registry, always.

Depends on the person! I spent a couple hundred on my sister and about a hundred on my bestest friend.

I have a few showers to attend coming up and I'm spending $30-$40.

I always go for homemade gifts. I made a diaper cake, quilt and baby leg cupcakes for my sister this weekend. The baby leg cupcakes are my go to present.

Family gets $50+. Someone that I'm/DH is close to gets $30-40. Just a friend gets around $20 (I usually just contribute to the group gift.)
