We are hustling to get our basement finished before #2 arrives and just got our 4 bids back. One person mentioned "cost plus" versus fixed cost which got me thinking what other stuff I ought to make sure and ask someone before we sign anything!

I would ask if they get multiple bids or just use the same subcontractors. I'd ask what percentage their cost plus is. I'd ask if you can see receipts for the fixed costs. I'd ask for references (or check Angie's list). I'd ask if they will put in their contracts a penalty for going over the end date.

I'd also ask how they handle change orders and typically how they supervise the subs. Do they or the subs warranty any of the work 
we are looking at finishing our basement too so this is fresh in my brain.
