I had a similar situation and we expedited. It was worth the peace of mind! We got it in plenty of time and I wasn't stressing every day over whether it would arrive in time. I want to say it only took 10 days.

@Mamaof2: You can call and ask the current timeline. They are usually pretty honest about the current turnaround time.

I would ask when you go in to renew it. I was going to expedite the kids' passports because I needed them within 6 weeks, but they told me the turnaround time (at the time) was only 2 weeks, and it was. I got their new passports in less than 2 weeks. So a renewal is probably similar. Definitely ask before you spend the money!

And you can ALWAYS call and get it expedited. So if you submit it and then two weeks later are worried, call, check the status, and expedite it then if necessary.
